CCTPP Meeting Minutes, August 16, 2011

MINUTES OF WESTERN CRYSTAL COAST TEA PARTY PATRIOTS
ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING
AUGUST 16, 2011

Meeting held at Western Carteret County Community Center, Cedar Point
Meeting was called to order by KEN LANG at 7:00 pm
Pledge of Allegiance was led by WAYNE WILLIS
Invocation by DEBBIE RUCKER

KEN LANG welcomed everyone in attendance and thanked them for coming.  He explained that the Crystal Coast TEA Party Patriot group, that was organized approximately 3 years ago and meets at the Golden Corral in Morehead City, has had for many months the aspiration of establishing other TEA Party groups at each end of the county.  Hopefully, tonight culminates one of those dreams.   He explained how he had attempted to find a restaurant in which to meet where the attendees could have a meal prior to the meeting as we have in Morehead; however most restaurants, especially this time of year, are cautious about utilizing space in their restaurants that may be needed by tourists looking for a good place to eat.  He settled on the Community Center.   When he first talked to Dave, who takes care of the Center, Ken thought he would only need a small room, especially at the beginning, since he was expecting possibly 15 or 20 people to attend.  We are a little larger tonight, since the meeting in Morehead was cancelled in order for several of that group to be here to welcome everyone tonight.  While the Morehead Group meets every Tuesday night, plans are for this new group to meet the first and third Tuesdays at 7:00 pm.  Ken said he may be looking for a different meeting location later on in the year, since use of the little room in the back here, costs $10.00 and the one we are currently using is $30.00 an hour.  Dave kindly allowed us the use of this larger room tonight since we were expecting the group from Morehead to attend.  Dave set up 30 chairs for the meeting but more chairs were needed, due to the large turnout.

Ken, for those who were not familiar with the TEA Party, presented a little background.  He said he had been on the radio last night with Lockwood Phillips, and Lockwood had asked questions about the TEA Party; who and how many attended the meetings, what kind of organization it was, etc.  He had been asked tonight “Why are we not more centralized and combined with other TEA Parties.  KEN explained that he felt our strength evolved from being small groups of people and decentralized, as opposed to having some group at the top telling us what to do.  That gives us the ability to focus on local issues as well as other levels of government.  If you really want to get involved in this organization or just attend the meetings, you can still get overwhelmed with so many things going on at the state level, federal level, as well as Carteret County level.  It is a lot to focus on.  So, we are not a formal organization; we are not incorporated; not a 5013C; nor any type of organization like that.  We have talked in the past about establishing by-laws, but we rejected that.  We decided we are more effective having informal gatherings where we can discuss issues; enjoying a more relaxed atmosphere where everyone feels free to speak his opinion.  He said some of us are Republicans, more of us are Independents, and maybe some closet Democrats.  He said he did know that in the past there were some conservative Democrats, but he doesn’t know how they can find a home in the Democrat Party today.

KEN, then apologized saying he was so overwhelmed with the large turnout that he had forgotten that we usually start our meetings with the Pledge of Allegiance and Invocation.   He called on WAYNE WILLIS to lead us in the Pledge and asked DEBBIE RUCKER to give the Invocation.

KEN encouraged anyone who has not gone on our web site to please do so.  He did not want to utilize our time tonight talking about our mission, core values, etc.  They are on our web site.  But he felt it was important that we are aware of the main things we focus on:  (1) fiscal responsibility, (2) free market economy, and (3) limited government.  We are loosely under the umbrella of the national TEA Party Patriots organization.  There are several TEA Party organizations, small groups, and organizations like the Americans for Prosperity, John Locke Society, and others.  We just happen to be associated with the TEA Party Patriots.
KEN introduced the officers of the Crystal Coast TEA Party in attendance, BOB CAVANAUGH, President/Chairman, ERIC BROYLES, Vice President/Chairman, PEGGY GARNER, Secretary, and NANCY BOCK, (who is not with us tonight) Treasurer.  The funds we accrue through the sales of t-shirts, hats and miscellaneous items and donations are used for paying for our tax day rally; that is held in April every year, and this year we participated in Beaufort’s 4th of July parade.
We passed out around 1000 pocket Constitutions.  Most appreciated our providing them a copy; however there was one man who refused to take a copy, saying he wanted no part of the TEA Party’s propaganda and trash.  Ken only had one copy of the pocket Constitution with him for pass out; however, Peggy had three more that she gave to those requesting it.  Ken said he would be sure to have more at the next meeting.  He said he had other information available on the table for anyone wishing to read it.  He had several copies of the Carolina Journal and informed the audience as to how to obtain a free subscription.  He also had a few of the re-districting maps also.

KEN asked BOB CAVANAUGH to please introduce tonight’s guest speaker.  Bob said the TEA Party tries to get involved in elections, but back in 2010, it just got so cumbersome with all the primaries, and trying to vet all the candidates, that we didn’t get everything done we would like to have.  Luckily, we only have the local elections going on this year, so we have been trying to get some of the candidates for office to come down and talk to us.  Since we are kicking off a new TEA party group here in the western end of Carteret County, we have Dave Fowler, candidate for Mayor of Cape Carteret with us tonight to tell us what is in store for Cape Carteret, and how he might impact it….Or he might tell us something entirely different.

David thanked the TEA Party for inviting him tonight and promised to be brief.   He acknowledged a lot of friendly faces he recognized in the crowd here tonight, (Ken and Bob, having worked with them at the poles in the past), Debbie Rucker, Clayton Gillikin, several neighbors, and Richie Renna, candidate for Cape Carteret town board.  David said we were well represented here tonight.  Technically, we are not in Cape Carteret, but in Cedar Point, but we won’t tell anybody about that.  He said he goes a long way back with the TEA Party.  He attended the first meeting, also the big rally in Newport, and several others.  He said he had been concerned about the TEA Party recently.  Word was that it was fizzling out and could not sustain its momentum.  But then when he saw the other night on TV that John Kerry was trying to stop the media from even printing anything about the TEA Party, and also referred to the downgrade by S&P as the “TEA Party downgrade”; then he quit worrying about us.  He knew the TEA Party was here to stay.  He said he was an arch conservative, that this is where he and the TEA Party run together.  Socially, we may be different, but this country has challenges in front of it right now, economically; so we all better be on the same page, because we are all going to go down together if we are not.  I want you to know there are economic issues right here in Cape Carteret that mirror the same conditions we find in Washington, DC and Raleigh.  Believe it or not, a town like Cape Carteret has deficit spending, trouble balancing its budget, and borrowing against its future.  Mr. Fowler said he is the one person who has been vocal about that for the last few years and he is going to try to stem the tide.  The only way to do that is NEW leadership, new commissioners, and hopefully new leadership from the top.  I have been in politics about 30 years now, and my wife, Wanda, who many of you may remember is the long time principal of White Oak Elementary School, will attest that I have been in politics too long, but I plan to be in it for a while longer because I have a lot to do and a lot to say.  Hopefully, I will have a lot of people join me in this crusade to become the mayor of Cape Carteret and bring financial stability to our town, while we still have time to do that.  Any Cape Carteret voters or have friends who are, I appeal to you to help me if you can, and if you can’t, just don’t say anything bad.  I do want you to know that in the western end of this county you do have at least one friend and his name is Dave Fowler and he thanks you for allowing him to speak to you here tonight.  Thank you.
Bob said he understands that Cape Carteret is in a financial pickle; that they have been spending money like drunken sailors – $50,000.00 for a crematory to burn road kill!  The county has a crematory, why does Cape Carteret need one also.  Is there that many animals getting run over?
Bob invited Richie Renna up to speak to the audience also.  Mr. Renna said he really didn’t want to take anything away from the TEA Party but he is glad he is here.  He had always wanted to learn more about the TEA Party and get involved with it, ever since he was a Glenn Beck watcher.  He was impressed with the TEA Party marches in Washington.  He was glad the TEA Party happened.  With all the fiscal problems we have today and the people who are destroying our country; he just felt it was something really needed.  He has written letters to the editor about things that are going wrong, most importantly in Cape Carteret.  He and his wife run a restaurant on Emerald Isle and they got to know a lot of people.  That is how he met Dave.  He always made Italian food for him, parmesan; he loves it.   Dave has some great ideas and we are sort of on the same scope.  He is right; there are things in this town that need to be shaped up.  He is amazed how much character this town has.  He and his wife, Sue, live here and enjoy it. He doesn’t want to see it go in a direction that will not be good for us; like the major increases in taxes.  He thanked the TEA Party very much for allowing him to speak with the group tonight.  (Peggy gave him a copy of the pocket Constitution and he thanked her and said he would keep it with him always.)
Bob said Richard Hunt was another candidate running for town commissioner.  He is very outspoken and we probably have read several of his letters to the editor also.  Bob had tried to get him to attend tonight but he was unable, so Bob hoped to get him to one of our meetings in the near future.
Bob said he wanted to bring up that Frank Palumbo, who just retired as Chief of Police in New Bern, and had spoken to the group in Morehead a few months ago, had let Bob know that he has declared his entry into the District 3 race to challenge Walter B. Jones.  He is planning to announce his entry on the 24th of August at the convention center in New Bern.  It is going to be at 12:30 in the afternoon.  Bob plans to be there and would like to bring an army of TEA Party members with him (as many as possible) to show that Frank has some support with a big fan fare there of red TEA Party shirts.  The redistricting with Carteret and Onslow counties being chopped out, Palumbo’s chances just evaporated; however, when they again redistricted it and returned Carteret and Onslow counties to District 3, plus, where there had been 17 counties, now there are 22 counties in the District.  Frank feels that the five additional county voters do not know Jones from Frank Palumbo, so he thinks he now has a more level playing field, plus maybe an anti-incumbent advantage also.  He is hoping to get a good showing in Carteret County.  Jones has been up there 18 years, initially ran on term limits; no more than 6 terms.  He is now running for his 9th term.  Jones is not a straight down the line conservative.  Some people like him because he doesn’t vote party but votes his conscience.  Bob said he didn’t want Jones to vote his conscience; he wanted him to vote the Constitution and vote the will of the people who elected him.  Don’t forget the 24th of August, 12:30 pm, New Bern Convention Center.  If you can make it, please be there.    Anytime you get any information on campaigns, please bring it to the meetings.  If anyone at this meeting would like to help out on the campaigns, please contact the candidates and let them know.

Ken said he was sure if we had watched TV today, we had seen where a gentleman challenged Obama on Biden’s reference to the TEA Party as terrorists and Obama had denied it ever happened.  Enough reporters had reported it on the radio and TV that everyone knew what the truth was.   Ken said when he signed off on Lockwood’s radio program Monday night, he said, ‘I’m Ken Lang, member of the Crystal Coast TEA Party Patriots, and I am not a terrorist”.
Bob said he was upset over Kerry demanding the news media not report on the TEA Party.  That is censorship and should never be allowed.
Ken said he had posted on the web site the article about four people in Wake County that had been found guilty of voter fraud.  The whole article was written around Governor Beverly Perdue’s veto of the Voter ID Bill.  However, having 4 people in one county should show there is a problem and is more widespread that they would have us believe.  They will need to pick up 4 Democrats to override her veto and they are going to try to do that, but whether or not they will be able to achieve that or not, is an unknown right now.  However, word is that if the Republican members can not get it passed now, they will bring it up again and keep trying until they do get it through.  He and Bob attended a Republican meeting the other night and Supreme Court Justice Newby, who had attended the meeting, pointed out that he had been invited to the Governors mansion several times, and he and all the Supreme Court justices, including the Chief Justice, had to show a photo ID to get into the mansion.  Since there is only
one Chief Justice in the State, you would think that they would know who she is (and she is a Democrat also).  There are some excellent articles, such as the above, posted on the web site that you might find interesting.

Every one has their own pet issues.  Ken and Eric’s pet issue is the board of education.  We have several people working on that.  Eric has collected a lot of budgetary information on the schools.  Nancy Bock has been working on trying to find out what the county is going to do as far as teaching the US Constitution.  There is a law that requires the Constitution be taught in all the schools in the United States during Constitution Week which is in September.  The TEA  Party has strived to get as many people to call their Board of Education and ask questions.  If you go to the TEA Party web site you will see the types of questions you should be asking.
Since North Carolina has been selected for the National Democratic Convention, and is obviously very important to Obama; he is going to be pouring tons of money and people into the state.  Someone said that the reason that voter ID was not supported by any Democrat in this state or any other state is because the Obama administration has told them they will not spend money in that state if they support that law.  Ken said he heard it was 65 million dollars to be spent in NC, so the Democrats in the Legislature and the Governor are in opposition to voter ID because they have been told by the Obama Administration ‘don’t you vote for that law, or you will not get any money’.  The Presidential election is our top priority, so whatever way you can get involved in it, you should be thinking about ways to do just that.  You can either do it as an individual or by working through particular organizations, but we need to defeat the current administration.
The next thing we need to put on our agenda is the Governor’s race.  We have to get rid of Beverly Perdue, so she can not do anymore vetoing.  If we can take some of the Democrats in the Legislature out with her, that’s even better.  The Judges election is extremely important. Right now it is 4 conservatives and 3 democrats.  We need to keep the balance at least where it currently is, however; if we can add more conservatives, it would be even better.  During the 2010 election, one of the things the Crystal Coast TEA Party Patriots did was to identify those judges that were conservative.  Since there is no ‘D’, ‘I’, or ‘R’ after the judges names and most are not even known by the voting public; by the TEA Party investigating which candidates were conservative, and passing out the TEA Party’s recommendations list, it gave the voters some idea of what judges we felt would represent our convictions.  The Democrats took those ‘D’, ‘I’, and ‘R’s off because there were more Republican judges being elected and they couldn’t break through, so by taking the party affiliation off, people would look at the ballot and say ‘I don’t know any of them’ and just pick one.  Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to let people know which ones are the conservative judges.  Question was raised as to why we could not return to having the ‘D’, ‘I’, and ‘R’s put back on the ballot.  Ken said he felt the Legislature had their hands full this year, and when things calmed down a little, it probably will be returned for discussion and voting.  However, we have to get rid of Gov. Perdue or she will veto it anyway.  Tom Austin said he understood that a judge had ruled on removing the identity of affiliation, and another judge had ruled they be put back on, because the minorities did not know who was a Democrat and who was a Republican.  Understand it is still in litigation.  Best way to handle it is through the Legislature.  Eric asked those in attendance to look into the candidates and their leanings, and bring up what they determine at the meetings.  If we decide to again pass out information at the polls, this will give us more information on which to decide who to recommend.

Ken asked that anyone who can to please write letters to the editor or call in to the radio and talk with Lockwood, who is a friend of the TEA Party, and help give us a little ‘good’ publicity.  This is one of the areas where the left beats us.  Although we are doing a lot better at calling our representatives, we need a better showing on the radio and newspaper.  The Jacksonville Daily News is really open to publishing articles as well as letters to the editor.  Jacksonville is a little more stringent about the length of your editorials than the News Times, but about three months ago Ken said he wrote a really long letter on the wind energy projects and the guy from the Jacksonville paper called him and said ‘Man that’s a long article’.  Ken told him ‘Yes, but it’s pretty good, isn’t it’; and the guy said yes, so he was going to publish the whole thing.  So they will print your letters even if they are a little long sometimes.

Mrs. Jan Grube said we all need to get to know our board of elections people.  She has never called them on any problem, or asked them for any favor without their cooperation.  We can call them and ask who are running and how they are registered and they are most cooperative.  Give them a call if you have a question.  Ken asked about the extension of early voting and was told it was understood to be still on hold.  Ken said he had found it was hard to get volunteers to work the poles and if you extend the time to like a month or so, it is going to get even tougher to get people to do it.  Ken said he had worked the poles every day (except two), 8 hours a day and it is hard.  Outside is rough but it is hard inside the building also.  They do train you as to what your duties are inside at the polls, so you may decide to help out there.
Debby Rucker said we have various organizations that agree and push our ideas and agendas.  There are the Republican Women’s Group, Americans for Prosperity, TEA Party Patriots, various other TEA Party groups, Civitas, etc.  She and several others were in Raleigh when they were voting on the abortion bill and it looked like a total loss.  She was sure there was no way they were going to override that veto, but when the vote came, it turned out 70 something for the override.  It was really something to sit there and watch our representatives in action.  All these different organizations are working together and not fighting each other, but have joined together with a common goal.  We can’t be at every meeting every time, but we can spread ourselves out and get involved and be seen in different places and let them know the TEA Party is watching.  You just have to choose your places where you can go and be most effective.  She said that is why they are calling us Terrorist, because we are so involved and making such a difference.
Bob Cavanaugh said we have to be careful and stick with our core values.  We shouldn’t get involved in areas like ‘gay rights’, ‘anti-abortion’, etc.  Those are all things that will separate us.  If you want to get involved with those particular things, that is fine; go for it, but don’t try to drag the TEA Party in.  The TEA Party should stay concerned with the Constitution and our core values.
David Fowler said in regards to early voting, he received a phone call the other day and was told they were going to start early voting two weeks prior to election – from 8 to 5 weekdays, and Saturdays, 8 to 1.  Bob said wasn’t that voter fraud in Wake County during the early voting?  Bob said he understood that the person voted in the early voting and was allowed to vote again during the regular voting.
Wayne Willis said going back to the 17th of September and teaching the Constitution, he had a question – “What kind of penalty will be imposed if they do not teach the Constitution that week as the law decrees”?  Ken said ‘it’s interesting; Nancy sent out an email, and in discussion with Matt Bottoms (assistant superintendent), he basically told her that the lower grades would be taught the Constitution and went into some minor detail about what that would entail; but for the high school they didn’t plan anything special, since they teach the Constitution to those students every day.  So that’s kind of the attitude we are finding.   Wayne said he had sent an email to Matt Bottoms about the game he had originated and understood that Mr. Bottoms was hoping Wayne could get the game ready in time for the Constitution Week.  Ken said he did not get that impression from the email he had received, that he, (Matt) was open to any outside assistance.  Wayne said he would send Ken a copy of the email he had received from Matt indicating they were interested.  Ernie Guthrie said he had graduated in 2011 and for Mr. Bottoms to say they teach the Constitution every day in high school was not true.  Ken said we all know that was an untruth; that the Constitution is not taught, period, much less every day.  Tom Austin wanted to know if we planned to buy the pocket Constitutions, as we had discussed, for every student at certain grade levels.  Bob said to buy them would cost about $200 per 1000, but he had found out we could get the pocket Constitutions from our representatives.   They would give us ‘for free’ a certain number upon request.  But giving them to the students is something we have to go through the Board of Education before we can pass them out.  We can’t just go in the schools and classrooms and hand them out.  Fred said if we were interested in how they are teaching the Constitution, we could go to the schools and request we be allowed to sit in and listen to the class.  Ken said we should discuss that at our meeting next week in Morehead.  Hopefully Nancy will be there since she kinda took the lead on this program.

Tom wanted to know if there was any discussion about a trip to Washington this year.   Bob said he felt the time for demonstrations in Washington DC was past.  It is time for us to get organized here in our own state and county.  There is a possibility there could be a demonstration in Raleigh, but nothing firm to date.  Since we are not a top down organization but a bottoms-up organization it is hard to get together with the other TEA Party groups to plan big events.

Eric reminded everyone that David Horton, candidate for mayor of Morehead City, will be our guest speaker next week to present his platform; at our meeting at the Golden Corral on Tuesday, August 23.  Ken reminded everyone that the Western TEA Party would meet at the Community Center on September 6 and the TEA Party Patriots would continue their meetings at the Golden Corral.  6:00 pm at the Golden Corral and 7:00 at the Community Center.  Those meeting at the Golden Corral usually meet early to eat, so their meeting starts at 6:00.  Meeting at 7:00 at the Community Center gives, those planning to attend, a chance to eat prior to coming to the meeting.  If this does not work out for the Western TEA Party group, then it can be discussed at the next meeting.

Thrilled to see so many here tonight.  Hope you will all come back and bring your friends.
Meeting adjourned.

This is Why We Must Elect Conservative Judges

U.S. judge blocks N.C. cuts to Planned Parenthood, at least for now

RALEIGH —North Carolina cannot withhold funding from Planned Parenthood until a lawsuit over that provision of the state budget has been resolved, a federal judge ruled late Friday.

The ruling by Judge James Beaty Jr. of Forsyth County gives at least a temporary reprieve to Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina while they seek to invalidate the portion of the state budget that would withhold funding for non-abortion services. The group, one of two Planned Parenthood affiliates in the state, said the injunction should allow them to keep operating until the lawsuit over the provision known as Section 10.19 is resolved.

“Based on the evidence before the court, it appears that Section 10.19 was adopted specifically to penalize Planned Parenthood” for the organization’s stance in favor of abortion rights, Beaty wrote, even though the law bars the group from using public money for abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is in danger. Planned Parenthood in North Carolina provides a range of other services, from tests for diabetes and high cholesterol to screening for sexually transmitted diseases.

Federal judges in Kansas and Indiana have blocked at least parts of laws stripping Planned Parenthood chapters of funds, but officials in both states have appealed.

The North Carolina budget provision would have barred Planned Parenthood from funding for contraceptive and teen-pregnancy programs. The group says the loss of funding would lead to layoffs, the end of free or low-cost contraceptives for poor women and the closure of its Durham clinic.

“We feel like this is a tremendous win for women in North Carolina, particularly for those who are poor or uninsured,” said Paige Johnson, vice president of public affairs for Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina, which operates health clinics in Durham, Chapel Hill and Fayetteville.

Planned Parenthood Health Systems Inc. operates clinics in Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Asheville, Greensboro, Raleigh and Wilmington. That group was not part of the suit, but supported it. The ruling affects both Planned Parenthood chapters.

“The unconstitutional special provision in the budget passed by the NC General Assembly to ban funding to Planned Parenthood for preventive health care for women was an attempt to punish Planned Parenthood for our strong belief in advocating for and providing comprehensive reproductive health care for women and men in North Carolina,” said Melissa Reed, a spokeswoman for Planned Parent Health.

The next step in the lawsuit will depend largely on whether the state appeals Beaty’s injunction. If not, Beaty could have a final decision shortly, Johnson said.

A call Friday night to N.C. Right to Life, which had supported the provision in the state budget, was not returned.

The provision was part of a state budget passed by the General Assembly, which is controlled by Republicans. Although Gov. Bev Perdue vetoed the spending plan, the legislature mustered enough votes for an override.

In arguments before Beaty this month, state attorneys defending the General Assembly said the budgeting decision doesn’t unfairly punish Planned Parenthood because the group could apply directly to the federal government for family planning funds.

But in his 35-page ruling granting the injunction, Beaty said the provision’s legislative history makes it clear that the denial of funds was intended as political punishment for the organization. Beaty quoted statements by House Majority Leader Paul Stam, R-Wake, tying Planned Parenthood to the eugenics movement and saying, “We should not be rewarding the perpetrators of that program.”

A message left for Stam was not immediately returned Friday night.

Beaty also dismissed the state’s argument that the budget is consistent with the General Assembly’s policy of “favoring childbirth over abortions,” noting that the funds in question can’t be used for abortions.

The state, Beaty wrote, “has not presented any evidence or even contention to establish how Section 10.19’s ban on using (Planned Parenthood) for non-abortion-related projects is rationally related to a legislative policy of funding childbirth services over abortion services.”

With the injunction in place, Johnson said Planned Parenthood hopes to be able to offer its services as usual until the outcome of the larger lawsuit.

“We fully expect to win the case,” she said.

Letter the Editor, Another Billion (or two) Dollar Coins

I received an email from a TEA Party friend today that pointed me to an ABC News web source about another flagrant waste of taxpayer dollars.  The Washington Watch Dog segment of ABC News picked up this story from the National Public Radio news.  This in itself is hard to believe; that ABC, much less NPR, would air something negative regarding federal spending.

The story is that in 2005, Congress ordered the US Mint to make presidential dollar coins commemorating every dead US President.  The US Mint in Philadelphia is making 1.8 million coins per day at a cost of 32 cents each.  Folks, this is about $576,000 per day for these dollar coins that apparently no one wants. These coins are going into temporary storage at the Federal Reserve in Baltimore.  A warehouse full of metal shelving 8’ high storing millions of commemorative presidential coins.

The spending doesn’t stop there.  They must have a vault large enough for all these millions of unwanted coins.  So what are they doing about it?  They will spend another $650,000 to build a vault in which to keep the unnecessary and costly waste.  Of course the vault will not be built close to the point of production. No way, that would make way too much sense and cost less.  So, they plan to build the vault in Dallas; Texas that is.  Now they have shipping costs to consider.  Three million dollars of shipping costs to transport these millions of coins to a safe haven far, far away.

The really idiotic thing about this story is they plan to continue making these “fools gold” coins until 2016.  By that time the number of coins will be in the ballpark of 2 billion! For those progressive liberals who are arithmetically challenged, that is equivalent to $2 billion dollars, face value, just sitting in a vault.

And true to form, Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), one of the co-sponsors of the 2005 legislation who put this boondoggle before our esteemed and most frugal congress, was asked by the reporter (or what we used to call a reporter) if he (Sen. Reed) had one of these presidential coins in his pocket at the time.  What do you think his answer was?  No! Of course not.  He didn’t want to carry the junk around either!

Then, Diane Sawyer asks this most probing question, “Why isn’t this one of the first cuts made?”  Wow, who would have thought this kind of in-depth investigative reporting would surface from B Hussein Obama’s state media.  Wonders never cease.

It makes one realize there must be thousands of other foolish money wasting laws in place.  There are probably so many that no one person has the foggiest notion of the count or where they are.  Sounds like a lot of other bills were passed “so we can find out what is in it.”  Wait, I am about to go off in another direction which is another story in itself and better left for another time. There is just so much to write about.

Come quickly January 2013.

Letter to the Editor – Join the TEA Party

  August 18,2011

To The Editor:

                   Come Join the Tea Party

Fourscore and seven years after this nation was founded it suffered the horrible effects of a civil war. Booth prevented the wounds of that conflict from being treated as Lincoln intended. Still the nation survived. A century and a half after the Civil War, the entire fabric of American life is again headed for destruction at light speed. Death by a thousand cuts is our destiny in ways unthinkable by Lincoln or Washington if common sense is not soon applied again to our national policies. This current challenge to the survival of the nation will not be overcome by more apathy.

Called by scholars “America’s Placid Decade”, the 1950s marked the end of peace and quiet in practically every aspect of American life. With only a few exceptions politicians have presided over half a century when the inmates ran the prison.  The insane have been in charge of the asylum. The majority of eligible voters slept through it.

The good news is that Independent voters have been aroused from the nap they started taking about 1960. In February 2009 these independents decided they had been Taxed Enough Already and started the second American TEA Party. Their half-century nap was over. As completely grassroots, non- homogeneous, and unaffiliated with any political party, these patriotic citizens are your only hope of a future for you and your descendants in this country. They proved it on November 2,2010.

If you intend to continue to live in the United States it is time for you also to wake up.  You are hereby challenged to begin participating in a local Tea Party group wherever you may live. In Carteret County you can get acquainted online at crystalcoastteaparty.com If there is not a group close by you start one.  The Tea Party organizations nationwide are composed of volunteer patriotic citizens. Their only goal is for good government for a “change”’.  Tea Party Patriots are doing all they can to save your country, but freedom is not free. Wake up from that long nap and help these republicans with a “little r” keep the American ship of state afloat.

If you don’t know what a republican with a little “r” is come to the Golden Corral at 6 on Tuesday night and  find out.

Perdue Plays Politics as Unemployment Jumps to 10.1%

For Immediate Release

Contact:  Rob Lockwood: (919) 424-5555

August 19 2001

RALEIGH, NC – In a speech last night in Asheville, Governor Beverly Perdue announced that unemployment in the state would jump to 10.1%. Instead of focusing on solutions for an immediate cure, Perdue took the opportunity to mislead the audience as to the real reasons behind the jump, and chose to play the “blame game” instead. This revelation was announced on the eve of the Southern Governors’ Association’s Annual Conference about jobs, an excellent opportunity for Governor Perdue to learn what real leadership is and how to reduce unemployment from successful GOP job-creating governors.

More than 300,000 workers have lost their job since Perdue was sworn into office 3 years ago. She supported President Obama’s failed “stimulus”, a program that led to the loss of America’s “AAA Credit Rating”, and resulted in markets tumbling. Perdue’s failed economic policies, paired with her lack of objection to President Obama’s agenda, have led to the hemorrhaging of jobs in North Carolina. This morning it was reported that Bank of America will lay off more than 3,500 jobs in Charlotte. This is reflective of poor management of the national economy by President Obama, and no condemnation by Governor Perdue about how his policies have hurt North Carolina.

Letter to the Editor, Sheep and Goats

Letter to the Editor:

This is in response to the person that used the analogy in your paper that there are sheep and then there are goats, and that the Republicans are Goats because they follow their leaders.  You can always identify the party of the writer because some democrats never use their name to sign a Letter to the Editor.  But if is five or more paragraphs and just less than a book-from-the-Bible long, and it spouts the democrat mantra for the week, then Ken Humphries  is the author and he does use his name (I’m proud of you Ken).

If you ever tried to herd goats, you would be better off herding cats.  Come to a meeting of the local Tea Party Patriots and you will see that if there are 20 people there, then we have 20 leaders in attendance.

If the writer of the goat and sheep analogy placed the Republicans in the goat category, then that leads me to believe that the Democrats are sheep.

Below is a true article from USA TODAY (in your computer search enter “USA TODAY sheep’s jump off cliff” for a fact check).

USA TODAY
JULY 8 2005

First one sheep jumped to its death. The stunned Turkish
shepherds, who had left the herd to graze while they had
breakfast, watched as nearly 1,500 others followed, each
leaping off the same cliff, Turkish media reported.
In the end, 1,450 dead animals lay on top of one another in a billowy white pile, the Aksam newspaper said. Those who jumped later were saved as the pile got higher and the fall more cushioned (actually the fall doesn’t hurt, it is the sudden stop at the end), Aksam reported.
It was later reported that the sheep had joined the Democrat party about two weeks previously, just got through with their indoctrination the night before, and that day was their first test on what they had learned.  The oddity of this is that it started about 1792, but it only happens when Democrats of any breed get together ie: Lemmings.
The only other animal that can be indoctrinated into the Democrat Party faster than sheep is the human, but they were found to start a bubble out of plumb and some are scared to put their names on a newspaper article.
As you note, I did take some license with this article but the part of the sheep jumping is true.  But I did sign my name.

Letter to the Editor re. First CCTPP Meeting in Wester Carteret

Newport, NC
August 18, 2011

TO THE EDITOR

The Crystal Coast TEA Party Patriots has been aspiring to establish a new TEA Party group in western Carteret County and Tuesday night, thanks to the efforts and hard work of Ken Lang, of Stella, that goal was attained.  Approximately 46 concerned and enthusiastic   citizens met at the Western Carteret County Community Center in Cedar Point.
David Fowler, candidate for Mayor of Cape Carteret and Richie Renna, candidate for town commissioner welcomed the group to the area, and wished them a successful endeavor.
Mr. Lang, who presided over the meeting, gave a brief synopsis of the TEA Party’s birth and growth, as well as it’s rational for existing.  The TEA Party is not affiliated with any political party or national platform.  It is composed of patriots who love America and believe in the Constitution.  We are mothers, fathers, small business owners, service providers, employees, employers; and we are voters.    Our core values are “financial responsibility”, “free markets”, and “limited government”.  While we believe in letting our voices be heard about subjects of interest and value, we refrain from controversial matters that may create diversion in our group.
Plans for this new Western Crystal Coast TEA Party Patriots are to meet twice a month.
Next meeting will be held at the Western Carteret County Community Center at 7:00 pm, September 6, 2011 and the following meeting will be held September 20 at 6:00 pm.  Invite all your friends to come out and get involved.
The Crystal Coast TEA Party Patriots, who meet at the Golden Corral in Morehead City, will continue meeting every Tuesday.  For those who wish to eat and socialize, we get together at 5:00 pm and the meeting begins at 6:00 pm.  Jerry Jones, Morehead City mayor, was the guest speaker at the meeting on August 2 and David Horton, candidate for Morehead City mayor, will speak at the meeting on August 23, 2011.  We invite everyone, who is interested, to attend.

TO THE EDITOR:

In his August 10 letter, “Obama supporter” says the Tea Party is a “cult” that needs to be investigated. “Obama supporter” couldn’t write a positive letter, itemizing the constructive accomplishments of his guy (oh, wait, there haven’t been any), so he attacks the character of the Tea Party and its members, although he probably doesn’t know any of us personally and he urges the FBI to check out Tea Party leaders. If the Tea Party has, as “Obama supporter” claims, “the power to tell Congress what to do,” it is a power that is based solely on the fact that the Tea Party consists of educated, conservative, informed, America-loving, involved voters who don’t mind contacting our elected representatives to tell them how we feel. And we sign our names.

First, this Congress cannot agree not to “ever” raise taxes; it simply can’t obligate future Congresses to behave in a certain way. The letter writer said George Bush should be impeached? “Obama supporter,” wake up! George Bush is no longer president. How can he be impeached? “And all his money and holdings taken away from him?” On what grounds? Because you don’t like him? How ignorant you are. This is America, not some Third World dictatorship.

The only totally true statement “Obama supporter” made is “It’s President Obama that these Republicans and the Tea Party want to get rid of …” He is correct. That is our ultimate goal, and we make no secret of it. We don’t apologize for it. We want Obama to be “a one-term president” … but not, as “Obama supporter” says, by hook or crook. By hard work, and by honest, fair and open elections. That’s the American way.

“Obama supporter” had to play on the detested “race card.” I say one more time — it’s not about R-A-C-E. It’s about Barack Hussein Obama’s poor policies, his failure to lead, his promotion of class warfare, his failure to close the U.S./Mexico border, his failure to curb unemployment, and the list goes on.

Barack Hussein Obama will never get my respect or my loyalty, until he loves this country as I love it and as every president up to now has loved it, until he implements sound foreign and domestic policies and until he surrounds himself with people who love this country.

I told Barack Hussein Obama these same things in an e-mail that I sent to him personally. And I signed my name. Unlike “Obama supporter,” I am not afraid or ashamed to sign my name to what I say. My name is Jennifer Rose Hudson. I live in western Carteret County, born and bred in North Carolina.

I retired as a Department of Defense civilian with 32 years federal service. I am a Tea Party member, and a conservative Republican voter. I volunteer in my church, in my community and with the USO. I pay my taxes and my bills. Bring on the investigators, “Obama supporter.” I can pass your test. And next time, please have the fortitude to sign your name. It only weakens your position when you hide behind an anonymous signature.

New Tea Party Theme Song???

Here’s a video that may send chills up and down your spine. This was passed on by someone attending the first Western Carteret County Crystal Coast Tea Party meeting on August 16th. Many thanks to you.

“We Ain’t Going Away”

Senator John Kerry Asks Media to Censor the Tea Party

via Politico.com

Sen. John Kerry was on “Morning Joe” this morning talking about yesterday’s stock sell-off and the widespread disapproval of Congress after the messy debt deal.

Real Clear Politics flagged one section that’s already getting traction on conservative blogs in which Kerry seems to pretty clearly be talking about the Tea Party.

And I have to tell you, I say this to you politely. The media in America has a bigger responsibility than it’s exercising today. The media has got to begin to not give equal time or equal balance to an absolutely absurd notion just because somebody asserts it or simply because somebody says something which everybody knows is not factual.

It doesn’t deserve the same credit as a legitimate idea about what you do. And the problem is everything is put into this tit-for-tat equal battle and America is losing any sense of what’s real, of who’s accountable, of who is not accountable, of who’s real, who isn’t, who’s serious, who isn’t?

MINUTES OF CRYSTAL COAST TEA PARTY PATRIOTS
9 AUGUST 2011

Meeting held at Golden Corral, Morehead City, NC
Meeting called to order at 6:00 by President BOB CAVANAUGH
Pledge of Allegiance was led by WAYNE WILLIS
Invocation by EULA PARKIN
Attendance – 31

New Attendees or Former/Previous Attendees – STEVE and DONNA BIBB from Emerald Isle (been six months or so since last attended), BILL HARRISON from New Bern (dropped in to see how we were doing) and two other attendees that arrived late, but we didn’t get chance to talk with – GLADYS and ED SUESSLE.  Glad to have you with us.  Hope to see you all more often.

BOB asked how we liked all those ‘nice’ names we were being called.  When we first came on the scene, according to Pelosi, we were just ‘astroturf’ (no grass roots).  Then we were racists, radicals, thugs, and the latest ‘it’s the TEA Party Downgrade’ (according to Sen. John Kerry).  We should not let it get us down.  We have come a long way in just two years.  We have to remain true to our core values (fiscal responsibility, limited government and free markets) and continue to support those who are in tune with us.  We should not get involved in emotional causes like ‘gay marriages’, ‘abortion’, ‘illegal immigration’, etc.  Yes, we should be able to voice our opinion, but not get into the fight.  It can only divide us and hurt our effort to restore our constitution and country.

ERIC BROYLES feels that since some of us paying the taxes have to undergo drug testing, it should be mandatory that anyone receiving a welfare check have to also.

BOB brought up healthcare and the cost.  He told of a friend who had been in the hospital and the hospital had charged him $117.00 for 2 nitro pills.  When he got out of the hospital and carried his prescription to the pharmacy to have filled, it cost him something like $12.00 for 3 months.
CLAYTON GILLIKIN said he took insulin which cost $104.00.  Then he saw the actual cost of it was .04 cents a vial.  Someone is getting rich on our backs.
GRACE GILLIKIN said when she worked with the penal system and ordered meds, there was a huge difference in cost and payment.  For example: a $2.00 bottle cost at the drug store $20.00.
FRED DECKER said he had served on the hospital board a few years back.  The uncollectable debts were written off as charity work.  Back then it ran around $6 million a year.
KEN LANG said he had heard part of a discussion about Obamacare and a new paragraph just unveiled.  Did anyone else hear and know what that was all about.  Someone said they thought it had something to do with property but they weren’t sure.
LOU KUKULINSKI said his father-in-law needed a very expensive medication for an ailment he had.  Medicare refused to pay, so he volunteered to pay for it himself; but was not allowed.  ‘He was told everyone should have the same opportunity’.  His paying for it himself made it unfair to those who could not afford to pay.
HOWARD GARNER said he knew of a baby who was extremely ill, and the doctor his parents took him to, refused to provide care because Medicare would not pay enough for his time.  He advised them to carry the baby to Greenville.  This is going to happen more and more.  In fact a lot of doctors are already talking about retiring due to the reduction in payments to them by Medicare.  HOWARD said for his last visit to the doctor for a routine check up; Medicare paid the doctor $20.00 for the visit.  He understood why doctors are discouraged.  They can not maintain an office and personnel with payments like that.
WAYNE WILLIS said the bad part is we will continue finding ‘hiccups’ in Obama-care.

EULA PARKIN gave a very interesting talk on the United Nations.  She is in favor of cutting our annual contributions to this organization.  She brought with her several articles on various informative data.  RUTH PARKER said when she and her daughter went to the United Nations building on her daughter’s field trip; she was told by their guide that if any nation could not pay their dues, the United States paid the dues for them.  No wonder our money is gone; when it is being thrown away like that.

HOWARD asked if everyone read the article in the paper about teachers’ layoffs and Dr. Novey. BOB said he hadn’t forgotten Dr. Novey; when asked if he had to decide whether to lay off teachers or complete the restoration of an East Carteret School building, he chose the building.  HOWARD said Dr. Novey is still up to his old tricks, trying to make the county commissioners look bad for not giving him all the monies he wanted.  It was all their fault that teachers had to be let go.  HOWARD said according to what he understood from Pat McElraft the state had ensured the schools had enough budgeted so they did not have to let any teachers go.  So why was Dr. Novey still whining?

BOB reminded us that there will be not meeting next week (the 16th) here at the Golden Corral.  Those who are interested will be going to Cape Carteret to assist in establishing another group in that end of the county.  It will be held in the Community Center.  Coming from Morehead City, go through the stop light on Hwys 24 and 58, to the next stop light at the bank on the right.  Turn onto the road next to the bank and continue until reach the Center on the left.  The meeting will start at 7:00pm.  Eat before you come, since it does not have a place to dine.  BOB said they were trying to get David Fowler to come and speak with us.

BOB asked us to continue writing letters letting everyone know about us and our ideals.
He also said he had heard from Willie Montague.  His ministry is raising funds and would appreciate us helping with $100.00 if we could.  We will discuss this further at our next meeting (here at the Corral).
BOB had a Republican meeting he had to attend so he had to leave early.  He closed the meeting encouraging us to start thinking about the upcoming elections, and to what extent are we going to get involved and how?  Also we are going to need poll workers.  We need to let everyone know we are still a force to be reckoned with.

Meeting adjourned at 6:55pm.
Minutes submitted by PEGGY GARNER, Secretary

Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Illegal Immigration & Border Security

From the Patriot Action Network…

Former Congressman Tom Tancredo’s list of Illegal Immigration Facts on Gov. Rick Perry of Texas

When I ran for president in 2008, I tried to pressure the Republican candidates to take a hard line against illegal immigration. For this, Perry called me a racist.

When he first took office as governor in 2001, Perry went to Mexico and bragged about his law that granted “the children of undocumented workers” special in-state tuition at Texas colleges, the first state in the nation to do so.

“The message is simple,” Perry concluded, “educacion es el futuro, y si se puede.” Education is the future, and (echoing Cesar Chavez’s slogan) yes we can.]

Just a few weeks ago, Perry defended his decision to give in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. He said “to punish these young Texans for their parents’ actions is not what America has always been about.”

Perry opposed Arizona’s tough anti-illegal immigration law SB 1070. “I have concerns,” he explained, “with portions of the law passed in Arizona and believe it would not be the right direction for Texas.”

He spoke out last year against using E-Verify to prevent illegal immigrants from getting jobs as state employees, who get their paychecks from the taxpayers. He insisted it “would not make a hill of beans’ difference.”

Numbers USA, a group that supports immigration control, gives Perry a “D-“ for his positions supporting amnesty, open borders, and opposing border security.

Four Charged with Voter Fraud in Wake County

Beverly Perdue vetoed the NC Voter ID Bill, and the NC House cannot get any Democrats to vote for overriding the veto. What are they afraid of? Might it be that they won’t be able to steal elections anymore in NC? Or might it be that the President has threatened to withhold $69,000+ in campaign funds to be spent in NC for the 2012 elections. Whatever the Democrat’s reason it does not ensure “one man, one vote” that has been the hallmark of this republic since it’s inception. What does it say about the Democrat Party when they have to steal elections rather than winning election on their merits?

MINUTES OF CRYSTAL COAST TEA PARTY PATRIOTS
2 AUGUST 2011

Meeting held at Golden Corral, Morehead City, NC
Meeting called to order at 6:00 pm by President BOB CAVANAUGH
Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mayor Jerry Jones
Invocation was given by LYN BAKER
Number of Attendees – 25

New Attendees – Gene & Kathy Crain (2nd visit); Larry Shock (attended about 6 months ago);
Julie Purdy (here once before) and Kelly Gordon and Angela Murphy (who
came in late).

Bob read a portion of an email from the TEA Party Patriots in regards to just before the House vote:
President Obama promised to bring change in 2008; the Republican Party promised change in 2010. Even with all the talk about change, lower taxes, raising taxes, etc., things haven’t changed enough, we still see politicians waiting until the last minute to address the problems; two or three politicians wheeling and dealing behind closed doors; passing legislation no one has had time to read; possible down grade in our AAA credit rating, massive out of control spending, and the spiraling unsustainable debt. They are trying to sell us a deal, which means we will be 23 trillion in debt in a few years instead of 26 trillion. They are saying the projected amount will be a little less than they thought. That’s not cutting spending, it’s just a failure of leadership and they are trying to blame us, the TEA Party, for it. While politicians get away with this, the TEA Party is getting blamed. Probably right now the only ones with any courage is the TEA Party who is willing to fight for the future of our country. So no matter how much they throw at us, we will stand firm because we don’t do this for us, we do it for our country.

BOB asked if anyone has any comments about the events of the past couple of days. Does anyone like that we got our debt ceiling raised? HOWARD GARNER said he was not convinced that it was going to hold – that there were too many loopholes and wiggle room. ERNIE GUTHRIE said he thought the stock market had said it all today when it didn’t rally back. Business people understand two things – making a profit and when the profit isn’t there, you make the cuts. Tough choices – you look at the interest on what they are borrowing and the ten years it is going to take us to cut that trillion dollars is going to cost a lot more. BOB said he was really proud of the TEA Party elected officials that stood firm in the House. A lot of them voted against this bill although a bunch of them did vote with it. He was really surprised at all the talking heads on TV and radio – they were all capitulating that we should take the chips off the table, put them in our pocket, and call it a win. Someone else said they thought this was because we got ‘no taxes increase’. BOB said well, according to the bill, it removes the Bush taxes in January, so that is an increase in taxes. A member said he thought they were saying ‘the big picture is the next election’ and we have to continue what we are doing – we just have to get better at it – and we have a lot of Republicans we have to work on and/or replace and hopefully in 2012 we can get rid of this President and only then may we have a chance; but we have slowed things down. PEGGY GARNER said, ‘but we gave Obama the time to get pass the next election’. BOB said that was one of the things he did not like. He would like to have this whole debt ceiling thing on the ballot next year to be a part of the election cycle. HOWARD said many of them in Washington think ‘most of us peons do not know what is going on’. BOB said, ‘true and half of those peons don’t care since they do not pay any taxes. You have all heard the statistic where the top 1% pays 30% of the taxes, top 3% pay, and all that and yet Obama says ‘it is time for the millionaires and billionaires to put some skin in the game’. BOB feels these people have already put in a lot of skin and more besides. PEGGY said ‘we need a flat tax where everybody pays’. BOB said maybe one way the Republicans can come back on this tax the rich thing is to call it the ‘Oprah Winfrey tax’ – that the Democrats want to tax Oprah and take her money. Several said that might help. BOB said the Democrats have created this image of people with wealth are all the old ‘cigar smoking, balding business guys. They don’t want you to think about all the people you see on TV, the movie stars, professional athletes, the Oprah Winfrey’s, the guy that owns the black entertainment network, etc. LYN BAKER said ‘people who earn their own business through hard work, where is the incentive now to continue’? BOB said he was talking to a friend this week that runs a large wrecker service here in the county. He recently cut his employees down to the bare bones because he doesn’t know what is coming down the pike, and is worried about what the health care thing is going to do to him. There are all kinds of regulations that are in the works as a result of this financial restructuring bill, plus the Obamacare thing. There is just so much out there being thrown at you that you are afraid to go out and buy new equipment, do any modernizing, or hire additional help. You can’t depend on anything being restructured, rescinded or even helping with a write-off. We don’t have any confidence in the Government. We are concerned that the Government is going to some how come up with other ways to increase revenue. HOWARD said one reason business is down for the wrecker service is the number of wrecks that have apparently dropped somewhat. Example: In the last submitted report Wild Wood Rescue Squad’s calls were down significantly for the last quarter. BOB said that is also a product of the higher cost of gasoline; and also possibly because we have had dry roads for the whole spring and summer, so people haven’t been sliding off the road into the ditch or each other.
ERIC BROYLES said he has not seen anything on the 9-12 this year. He wonders if they are going to do something on the balanced budget. BOB said there were rumblings from the TEA Party Patriots about coming up with something on what we are going to do this year about 9-11 or 9-12’. Nothing firm yet. BOB personally thinks that the time for getting on the bus and going to DC is past. Now is the time to get involved in the local neighborhoods and working on your neighbors, trying to gin up the votes. We need to maximize as many votes as possible. This is very important, especially during the primary season. The primaries are usually in the middle of May and the voter turnout in Carteret County for the primary is just abysmal; so when election time comes they are all going ‘where did all these yahoos come from and how did they get on the ballot?’…a choice between two devils. We need to somehow crank up the voter interest in the primary so they will be better informed on election day.
BOB reported that KEN LANG is not here tonight, due to setting off the fireworks for the Jacksonville Night Out. The Western Carteret TEA Party organization that originally was scheduled for tonight has been postponed until Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the Cape Carteret Community Building. BOB asked, ‘In order to help kick that organization off and also meet some of our “down-west” potential members, would you all like to move our meeting for that night to Cape Carteret. Just for that one meeting to help get the group started?’ He said he realized that everyone here cannot make it, since some live all the way down east and that is quite a journey from one end of the county to the other. PEGGY was asked to put the change of venue into the minutes and spread the word that we will meet on August 16 at the community center in Cape Carteret, in lieu of Golden Corral in Morehead City. Question on how to get to the Community Center…Bob said easiest way is to just go through the traffic light at Cape Carteret like you were going to Swansboro, and just beyond the traffic light is a BB&T Bank on the right. There is a little road next to the bank. Just follow it back to the Center which will be on the left. Discussion of time of meeting. BOB said he thought it was 6:00 but PEGGY said Ken had said at our July 29 meeting that they were thinking about 7:00. BOB said we’ll check it out and let everyone know. This is not a restaurant, so those of us who normally eat before our meetings, need to either eat prior to attending or bring a snack and drink.
HOWARD said we had found out what the Board of Education was doing when it was discovered by the County Commissioners that a 5 million surplus had been found hidden in our Carteret school system budget. He said it was happening all over the state. Gilford County had 10 million hid, and Charlotte/Mecklenburg had pulled the same stunt but their commissioners had not found it out until after they had approved the budget – so as he has stated before, they are all trained by the same group and singing from the same song book.
BOB wanted to know, since he was absent last week, if PAT and JIM NALITZ had made a report on their findings on number of teachers in the schools. PEGGY said “apparently you didn’t read last week’s minutes. Their complete report was in them.” HOWARD said he found some discrepancies (not in PAT and JIM’s report) but in what had been reported to him by a lady Tabbie Nance had referred him to. She had said they did not have any Ag Teachers in middle schools, but the web site for the schools (that PAT and JIM had looked into) showed they did have. So who do you believe?
BOB said he hated to keep jumping around on topics, but we had talked in the past about candidates for public office coming to our meetings and talking to us so we could ask them questions. Since we started out as the Morehead City TEA Party before we changed our name to Crystal Coast, we had decided to ask the Mayor of Morehead to come and speak to us first and he has graciously accepted. He will be challenged in the upcoming primary by David Horton, a current city council member. Mr. Horton has spoken to us before about the O’Neill park, but he will come back later in August (16th had been originally proposed but there will be a conflict in dates since we are planning to go to Cape Carteret that night.) Eric said he would contact Mr. Horton and arrange another date.
BOB introduced Mayor Jerry Jones and turned the floor over to him.
Mayor Jones said he was enjoying our comments and discussions. He told us he has been mayor of Morehead city for 12 years and is seeking another term as mayor. BOB jokingly referred to term limits. Mayor Jones said, well, yes and no. If you were being paid a great salary, but for someone who volunteers their time to civic organizations, and is doing a very good job, I think they should be able to carry on. BOB asked Mayor Jones how much he was paid as Mayor. Mayor Jones said $400.00 per month, or about $350 or so after taxes. He said he was going to give a brief presentation and then open the floor up for questions. He felt that we would better understand his platform with that type of format. He has taken a lot of notice of the TEA Party. The TEA Party effort is doing wonders throughout the country. He thinks it was time to slow things down a little bit; make people stop and think about what is going on and just regroup. He knows that ERIC is Vice President of this organization, but is also very active in the local government in Morehead City and throughout the county. ERIC has included him on his email list and the mayor appreciated that because it kept him updated on what was going on. But just to talk about him and his philosophy, ideology, will give us a better idea about our local government. He still feels he is doing a good job as mayor. First of all, local government, or all government begins at home. Local government is where we can really get involved. By getting involved in the local level, we can them move up to the state and federal level. I jokingly tell people all the time, ‘if you want to see good government, look at local government; if you want to see bad government, look at state; and if you want to see out of control government, look at the federal government.’ It is out of control right now. Some of this out of control is on the debt ceiling. We have some issues on term limits, and stuff like that, that we really need to address. Until we can take all the benefit packages out of our career politicians and that level, it is going to be hard to do.
He was born in Morehead City. He told HOWARD he understood he was born in Newport. HOWARD said yes, downtown Newport, before it moved up the street. The Mayor said Newport has changed a lot, just like Morehead. Growing up in Morehead City, times have changed. Things change fast. You never want to lose sight of, don’t ever forget where you came from. He thinks that is the philosophy of our country and our families, and our local governments. Never, ever forget where you came from. If you don’t know where you came from, how do you know where you are going? It wasn’t that long ago, growing up in Morehead City, we didn’t have a sewer treatment plant. We didn’t get one until 1966 and before that time; on the falling tide, that’s when the sewer got emptied into Bogue Sound. He said he jokingly tells everyone that is when he learned to do the breast stroke. We can all relate to those types of stories, but times do change and change is usually good. It is a moving target. We have to be diligent, aware of that target, because we do not want to forget our roots and forget where we came from. We live in Carteret County for a reason, and that is the quality of life here. I tell my wife all the time; she wants to complain about every time we want to fly somewhere, we have to go out the county, drive to New Bern, fly out and puddle jump to Charlotte, and get another plane to go somewhere else; so I remind her, yep, on the flip side it is hard to get here. And that is the life style we like in Carteret County. At the local level, that is what the mayor strives to do. He does like to remind people although each municipality has it’s own governing body and Carteret County has it’s own governing body…they really are not the governing body, the people are the governing body. The citizens are the governing body. These are the people we grow up with, work with, our kids go to school with, go to church with. We have a vested interest in this community and yes, while I do get paid a little bit of money that helps with reimbursements, I can’t retire off of that, believe you me. To me, there is a passion about Morehead City, and just growing up here, really wanting to maintain this small town feel. I also recognize that you can’t just stand still. If you don’t move forward, you are going to fall backwards. One of our neighboring communities, refused to look forward, and that town is paying for that now. Yes, I am talking about Beaufort. They are struggling to even get a water system or sewer system over there. That is something that we have strived for here in Morehead City, to stay ahead of that curve. Engineers call it a 15 or 20 year plan. I call it a 30 year plan. I am always looking at the long term plan for this. I want to make sure that I leave my children, your children, the least amount of worries as I can about the finances of our community. A municipality’s primary duty and responsibility is health, safety and welfare of our citizens. The purpose of a municipality is to provide a higher level of service. That is why we choose to live in cities. We have a responsibility not to go overboard, and don’t forget we live here and pay the same taxes as everybody else, but sometimes it is easy to get caught up in this whirlwind and because we are volunteers, working with you, going to church with you, we also have other jobs and we just want to give back to our community, so it’s difficult sometimes. It is a big responsibility. I don’t want to pay more taxes than anybody else, but I also recognize that by living in a municipality I expect a higher level of service. And I expect when I call for police protection, I don’t want to hear the sheriff is 30 or so miles away. I want a quicker response time than that. Same thing with the fire department. When I turn on my water spigot I want to be sure I have good clean water coming out. I don’t want to have to worry about that. Right now our well water around here, once you get the initial approval from the health department you do not have to get any more water tested. You do not know what is in that water, but in the municipality we have a little over 100 tests that we do and the water monthly to make sure it stays clean. Our garbage cleanup – I will admit it is a whole lot better than it was when I was growing up – a lot cleaner, but that’s not because of the actual city itself, it is because of the citizens themselves. We are more aware now of our health and cleanliness, so we are more attentive to that. Another thing, and we hit on this hard, talking about the PCS thing that almost snuck in on us here, is that we protect our citizens by zoning. We create these zones for land use where you can live in comfort with your family, and not have to worry about an industry going right next door to you. That was kind of the issue we had going on down there on the water front. That was my initial problem, when I heard about it. I had heard back about 6 months or so that PCS was going to expand their facility, but that didn’t raise a bell for me, alarm or anything. They are down there now and just expanding their facility. Well, early in June I heard they were building a sulfur melting facility. That did raise a flag and that is about the same time everybody started hearing about it. We came together as a community and did what we had to do to protect our health, safety and welfare. But it is a moving target and we are not over it yet. I met with TV people today and they questioned about the zoning – are we going to change it? The answer is ‘we are going to look at it’. We are going to have to be very careful about that too, because you can’t just spot zone somewhere. When you zone something it impacts on all the zoning districts. You don’t want to be knee jerking on that and hurt somebody else in the process. We provide park services, places for people to gather for community services or play sports. Morehead City has done well, and done well without having to raise taxes over these years. In fact, we have reduced. That’s a good number too, not having raised taxes. You can raise the tax rate without raising taxes. The tax is how much you write that check for. That is what I am mindful of. Somebody that has a 20 cent tax rate and now has a 28 cent tax rate; actually could be paying less tax. I know I am. It’s not much; maybe 30 or 40 dollars a year but it is still less, so you know you don’t want to get blindsided by that either. But the mayor, and talking about me, that is the reason I’m telling all these stories is so you can get to know me and why I feel I am not finished yet as mayor. There is continuity here. I had the mayor of Atlantic Beach call me up the other day and wanted me to try and get one of his commissioners to run for reelection.
I’m not saying everything is great – we need to quit all the wasteful spending and bring jobs back to America but there is money out there that if you don’t get for your community, someone else is going to get for theirs. So there is no need to get ridiculous about it and not go after it. If you have continuity in your organization and, things do not happen in a year or two years, some can take up to 10 years or longer to happen. These agencies look at that and that is why Morehead City has been so successful in obtaining a lot of assistance from federal and state agencies. We haven’t had to spend our local tax dollars. Another thing the number one thing that a mayor does is he is the public relations person. He is the one that sells his community. He is the one that makes people feel comfortable and want to come live in that
municipality. It is his job to set the tone – and I don’t mean burden – it depends on his personality that sets the type of tone for that community. You have been to some boards where you have seen unruly meetings where they get out of control. When that happens you can’t make responsible decisions – you make knee jerk decisions – you make mad decisions – or you walk away and don’t make any decisions. Under these circumstances, it will not be good for the community. So you want to maintain that calmness, and get better results from your governing board.
That’s my job. I feel that when you come to our city council meetings and you are sitting out there, you are looking at a business, at a board of directors, and you want us to act like professionals. You want us to understand that we are spending your money, your investment, and want to be aware of what we are doing with it. And I want to know what we are doing with it as well. I want you to know what we are doing with it. That is another big roll for a mayor is to have that personality; that trust between the council members, and the community. It is a trusting relationship. The mayor’s position is an honorable position. It is a very integral position and an honest position. It is not a gray area. If you know me I am not a gray person, I’m either black or white. You will know where I stand at, but I am not always firm on that stance. New information could move me over a little bit, but you will know where I am standing. I will not be on the fence teetering one way or the other, so that you walk away feeling uncomfortable about your leadership and investment. This is my passion. I wish I could make a living doing it, but I owe too many bills. When I first got elected, 12 years ago, I had help. I don’t know if any of you remember Mayor Horton, who was well respected in the community, and I tried to follow in his leadership style. I grew up with Bud Dixon. Bud did a lot for Carteret County. Before I close I would like to reiterate that this is why it is so important that you have continuity. We, in Morehead City, governed about 26 to 28 thousand people. That is almost half the population of Carteret County, so you are influenced even though you may not be in our ETJ. What we do affects everybody in the county. We try to balance our residential areas. I want you to feel safe at home. We do have to have our business districts. We want to be able to buy things, but just as important –we want them to come in and pay a lot of taxes, so they can keep our taxes low – and that is why we have designated this place out west of Morehead to be our shopping center and I don’t want them to get much closer into our residential area.
In closing, I am reminded about a lot of wisdom from a lot of people over the years, and three terms of advice that have been given to me are (one from Ms Geri Femia) (1) hold everybody up to the highest esteem (2) never, ever forget your roots. (3) Love your people and they will love you back. You may not live in Morehead City and be able to vote for me, but you probably know someone who does. If I could ask you to do that, I would appreciate it. Now I’ll open up for questions.

BOB asked when was the election – November 6th ? Mayor answered it is the first Tuesday in November. It is not a primary, but a general election.
BOB asked how many town council members are up for election? Answer – Paul Cordova who is our tenured council member has filled for reelection. David Horton, who has vacated his position to run for mayor and John Nelson has retired.
BOB – What is the city manager’s job in relation to everything? Answer – Randy Martin, our city manager, makes about a $100,000.00 a year, plus benefits. (Probably around $110 to $115). In the US there are two types of mayors. You have your strong mayor system and your weak mayor system. In NC they are all weak mayors. The strong mayor system is what you find in the large cities, like NY City, where the mayor has veto power. He is able to appoint department heads, committees, and has a lot of control. In North Carolina we have the weak mayor system and the weak mayor system is that the mayor doesn’t have that veto system, doesn’t hire or fire, and doesn’t appoint committees, by himself. He works with his council. There are two types of government there also. You have the mayor/council form of government and the council/manager form of government. The manager works at the pleasure of the council. The council hires the manager to run the city. Back in the old days the mayor ran the city. If your roof springs a leak, you call a roofer; if your city has a problem you call the city manager. Randy works at the pleasure of the board. He does not answer to one or two on the board, he answers to the whole board. He is very influential, but that is what he is hired to be.
BOB – How long has Randy been town manager? Answer – He’s been in Morehead City about 15 or 16 years.
ERIC – Thought the town manager reported to the mayor and participated in council meetings. He does the general day to day management? So the mayor can’t say ‘Hey, Randy, I would like you to look at this and get back to me.’ Answer – In a working relationship, yes, he does answer to me as the mayor, and I can tell him to do something and he should do that, but the mayor does not have the authority by himself to really order him around. The council can, but just day to day routine and I say Randy, I would like you to do this, or that; yes, he will do that.
ERIC – So in reality you are in the chain of command for him. Answer – Yes, I represent the council and am the chief executive officer of the town. But I can’t fire Randy. That would have to be a majority of the board decision.
Questions, remarks, and answers were made on the O’Neill Park; most of which have been covered in previous meetings.
BOB brought up the subject of the PCS situation. How in the world could all the officials, town council members, even county commissioners, not know what was going on. Now they are all sitting around going like this (fingers pointed away from each other), while shrugging their shoulders. How could they not possibly not known what was going down the pike. The innuendo appears that someone was on the take. He said the mayor had said it kinda got sprung on them the first part of June and he had read in the paper that the mayor was going to do something that would ensure this type of thing never happened again. Answer – Yeah, you are right, those doing the finger pointing thing are not leaders. You will never see me do that. Morehead City policy is when environmental permits come in; it is handled at the staff level, planning level. All they are doing is reviewing and ensuring it meets city ordinances before it goes out. This is the current policy. I did not write that. It has never been a problem before, but apparently we have a problem now. That is what we are going to review, so we won’t have the same problem again. Yes, there was some verbage in there that said melting facility, but it did not raise a flag, even though it probably should have. As far as that department, they did nothing wrong. They were just following policy. I can not blame any of them for that.
ERIC said he had talked to the second in command and he said the air quality control assessments had gone out to everyone, including New Bern, the latter part of December and there was a comment period that all the government agencies involved had until January 31 to respond. He knows it was received by Morehead City. It landed on someone’s desk, whether they had the ability to review it or not, communications broke down at that point. How did it get all the way to June, when only one more permit was required before anyone became aware of what was happening. Mayor said he did not know if it was a communications breakdown or just a bad policy. If he had been looking at that assessment, he would not just be looking at the air quality, but also the zoning. He lives in down town Morehead and he does not want a smoke stack down there. Talking about a 95 million dollar (offensive) facility right here, you have a yacht basin there, and if you build that facility, where are they going to go. You know they are not going to stay there. They are going to move out, so what have we gained. Not a net gain, but a net loss, so that is what he would be looking at from a tax base and job maker.
PCS said they were going to create 18 jobs, but 13 were already existing. If you are going to build a $95 million facility, I don’t think 185,000 dollars is going to make or break that project. That is how much money they were talking about receiving from NC Commerce. To receive that $185,000.00, Carteret County had to match $90,000.00 of it. So everybody was sworn to secrecy. I did not know this as Mayor of Morehead City. I found out about this on June 7 as President of the Economic Council. My director came to me and said Jerry, I’ve got to tell you something. I know I signed a confidentiality paper, but I have to show you something. Even our board didn’t know it, because our director had signed it. The Executive Board met and said ‘No, this is not going to happen.’ Since then we have changed our EDC policy. Keep in mind we have a brand new director. I’m not throwing him under the bus either, and he, the mayor, was new to the board also. Now, any member of the EDC board can sign a copy of confidentiality agreement and if he does he can disclose it to the rest of the board. Mayor Jones said he found out about it as President of EDC before being told as mayor what exactly was going on down there. Expanding the facility, putting more docks in didn’t mean anything to him. ERIC said it was his understanding that since all this had come about the matter was now going to be put to rest. The mayor said yes, but not to mislead anyone, the Morehead City council had known about the expansion a long time, but did not know about the sulfur melting until recently.
ERIC said ‘in his speech to the City Council on May 10, 2011, I raised the concerns that our city government has a prioritization and spending problem in the allocated use of taxpayer’s money. Since the latter part of 2007, when the economy started its downward spiral into a deep recession, Morehead City spent over $10 million dollars on projects that was not critical to the operations of the city. The projects that the money was spent on was $1.3 million for the JIB property; $6 million on a new police and EMS station; $1.2 million above the original $1.2 million on the O’Neill field, and $1.2 million on two boat ramps. This does not factor in the ongoing operational or maintenance costs for these projects or the High School building that was purchased on Bridges Street for $1 million that is currently underutilized. How does all this type of spending, especially during a recession, fit into the world of things concerning one of the primary principles of the TEA Party which is fiscal responsibility? That’s the first question.
Would it not have been wiser to apply these funds towards the outstanding debts owed by Morehead City, NC (i.e. the Water Treatment Plant)? What can you say that would make these folks here believe that your future policies and recommendations to the City Council will be of a sound nature and fiscally responsible?
Mayor Jones said he would answer that in three parts: The Jib Property in downtown Morehead. Morehead is synonymous with its water front. Without its waterfront you will lose a lot of tourists spending money there. And the Big Rock, which is a private organization, has over a ½ million dollars in this project. And that is just the beginning of it. It is not all on the tax payers, but we are looking at the bigger picture of revitalizing down town Morehead to actually help the taxpayers. When our guests come in and spend money it keeps our tax burden down. On the police department, as I previously stated I look at the 50 year plan, and this is the first police department ever built. Previously it was in the old municipal building on A Street, and they did put a jail cell in there but that has been there since we had 4 or 5 policemen and now we have 30 + policemen. It was time. Not being a wealthy person, I tell this story about when he bought a new boat and someone asked how much it had cost. He told them $250.00 a month. He said no, he wanted to know how much it cost. I asked him why, did he have $14,000.00 to buy it. I don’t so it costs me $250.00 a month. To me that is part of budgeting. We have a debt service that we have allocated X amount of dollars per month or annually; however we pay them back. This police department was presented as a net savings (I would have to check to get the amount for you). Out of the $6 million building the county owns $2 million of it. They put the 9-11 center up there. Since they have done that, we have, and luckily the Morehead City police department they also hired MC dispatcher. They had to apply for the position. They got hired in there along with some others. So we don’t pay for dispatchers any more. So the savings of the salaries and benefits also offset the costs of that building. I feel like it was a good fiscal plan.
ERIC said but was not the building on Bridges Street purchased to be the next police station?
Mayor Jones said actually it is supposed to be the next administrative building for Carteret County. That is their plan. They are going to renovate ½ and MC is going to renovate the other ½. We sold the property. That was kind of a flip, for property that was down on Sunset Drive on the water that we sold for 1.6 million dollars and we used that to buy the Bridges Street building. He thought that was a good deal.
ERIC asked what Morehead City’s current debt service was. Mayor said well, the Water Treatment Building is about $16 million, so would guess somewhere around $25 million.
ERIC said he understood the city employees had not had an increase in pay in several years. You know when you walk into the grocery store what is happening to the prices, so he feels it imperative that the city take care of these employees.
ERIC said as you know the TEA Party’s core values are Fiscal Responsibility, Limited Government, and Free Markets. As mayor how do you expect to achieve these values in the next 2 years if reelected? Fiscal Responsibility – The mayor said he feels they do that. He feels that if anything happens to him tomorrow, he is confident that he has set the stage for future generations where they will be OK in MC. He only sees Operational Spending, and no more Capital Spending. He does not see any further capital projects coming on line in the near future. Limited Government – Do not take to the extreme but maintain balance. Rumor is going around that they are going to raise taxes. He said they will remain revenue neutral and that means they will not take in any more than they did last year. It was 28.3 cents and they did it for 28.5 cents. It is not like they went above revenue neutral, not with 14/100s of a penny. It is not devastating by any means. We do operate under a balanced budget. We are mandated to. We’re not like the federal government, we can’t just print more money. Free Market Capitalism – In the past few years we have increased the number of businesses here. Is there anything new coming down the road that you know of. Morehead City (Carteret County) has the highest retail sales in any city in NC. It is not because of the locals in Carteret County. It is because all these people that come through Carteret County spend money here. And for those of us who grew up here we know how much better off we are. I remember the days when Labor Day came around and everybody went back home, we rolled up the streets. It was a tough time to make a living back then. Carteret County is a little more buffered than most counties because these people come here and spend their money. HOWARD said we also have Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune. The mayor said he hated to hear about those F18’s that we lost to Calif. HOWARD said NC had a lot to do with us losing those planes. When the government was denied the chance to have an outlying landing field for these planes, it was obvious to him we would lose them and we did. This landing field was necessary, and NC didn’t want it in their back yard. If we here in Carteret had helped them get this OLF, we might could have gotten those squadrons. HOWARD said you talk about the tourists spending their money in MC, where do you think Newport citizens spend their money? If MC would get a Sam’s, then you would get all of our money. MC gets a whole lot of sales tax money, also. You would be amazed how much these little fire departments in the outlying towns, get in sales tax money. The mayor said in MC alone, they get 28 million a year in liquor sales. HOWARD said he did not buy his liquor in MC.
ERIC asked what set him apart from his opponent. Why did he think he was better to serve as mayor than Councilman David Horton. Mayor Jones said he felt one of his qualities is ‘team building’. He learned a long time ago that you can’t achieve anything by yourself. You have to have the trust of those you are working with. That is a very strong suit of mine. I strongly feel that it’s not always about the money. The money is very, very important, but it is not always about the money. You have to balance that out too. When you are providing public services, you have to look at that service and sometimes it comes at a cost. If it was all about the money we could just get rid of it all completely. I think the position of the mayor is a very humble position. You need to maintain that and be respected. It needs to be one of integrity. It doesn’t need to be confrontational and when people come to Carteret County and MC, they need to be made to feel welcome here. One philosophy of mine is ‘my door is always open’ and I am for anything until proven differently. Some people’s door is shut until you force them to open it. As far as business ability, I think it is tit for tat on that one. We are both business owners.
CLAYTON GILLIKIN asked if the mayor knew what percentage of local people, that have been here for over 50 or 60 years compared to the outsiders moving in (sometimes referred to as ding batters or dit dotters. The mayor said there is a difference. The ding batters come for a visit and the dit dotters come and stay. Which is Clayton referring to? The mayor said he could tell about MC (which kind of balances with Carteret County). About 40% of home owners here are absentee home owners. That is a big positive. That’s 40% that is paying taxes and getting part-time services. CLAYTON said in other words about 60% were born and raised here. Yeah. The mayor said he left the area and went to college, and things didn’t work out for him back then, and for financial reasons, plus that is where he wanted to be. When he go to evaluating and was looking for ways to make it work out, and deciding where he wanted to live, which was Carteret County, so he chose to come back here and started his own business, and has been doing it for 30 some years. A lot of his school mates left the area and went elsewhere because they couldn’t make a living here…and there is still not a lot of potential today, but it is better than it used to be. What are these old friends doing now? They are coming back and they are buying investment property, but they are ultimately buying their retirement home. This might not be the greatest place to make a living but it is the greatest place in the world to raise your family, or retire to. A lot of people who were born here are coming back.
Question – As mayor, what do you find to be your biggest challenge as far as motivating your council and community…getting them to follow where you want to go? Mayor asked, do you mean in general or specific? General. Mayor said his biggest challenge is juggling his mayor’s job, his family, and his business. You can’t afford to just be mayor unless you are retired or wealthy and I am neither. I am MC first working mayor. Every mayor before me was retired. The first thing you have to do is tell people what you are going to do and do it. Once said, they know what to expect. I structure so many hours a week for mayor duties. I am at city hall every day from 10 to 11 o’clock (exceptions to every rule). Now everyone knows if they want to talk to the mayor they have to come between 10 and 11 o’clock. That has been one of my biggest challenges is juggling my personal life with my business and mayoral life. Evidently it is working. People are not dumb. They know when someone is just there for personal reasons. They can see right through them. Someone once said there is nothing more sincere than the heart of a volunteer. I think people see that in me and realize it is not for any personal gain. It is because I love my community and want to continue working with the public.
ERIC asked if he considered himself a fiscal conservative. Mayor said ‘I was raised a Democrat and one of the things we had to do at the school I attended on finances was to declare a party. You had to do that before you graduated political leadership. When he mentioned this to his dad, he was told ‘what’s to decide – you’re a Democrat’. Growing up in Carteret County, most of us understood that back then. Things have changed now. One day his professor came up to him and asked what he had decided he was. He guessed he was embarrassed to say he wasn’t a Democrat. He said he had kinda made up his mind and he thought he was leaning toward Republican. He said what’s the problem – it’s quite obvious. He was just waiting for Jerry Jones to say that. He told Jones that he was a moderate conservative. You have a balance. When he was president of the League of Municipalities, he was told the same thing. He thinks that is where he has a good cross over with people, but he is definitely on the conservative side. I would like to say this in answer to the question, I understand partisan support to get elected somewhere. I don’t think you should elect someone just because of what part they are in. I think you should support them for their beliefs, their ideology, and for what they stand for, but I also believe once you are elected, you need to take that party hat off and serve all the people.
BOB asked if anyone else had a question. Last chance to beat up on a living, breathing mayor. BOB thanked Mayor Jerry Jones for coming tonight and told him he was welcome to sit here and listen. We are going to go on a little bit longer.

BOB told about his coming to Carteret County from New Jersey, fresh out of boot camp, and thinking ‘the Marine Corps had to look long and hard to find such a remote place’. He remembers standing in line at the grocery store and the cashier and the lady ahead of him were just chit chatting away. BOB was getting a little antsy wanting to get his pack of cigarettes and get out of there. Finally the lady at the register turned around to him and said very calmly, “Sonny, just take it easy, I’ll get to you”. It took him about 4 years to get New Jersey out of him to where he could finally just sit back and relax and enjoy the tranquility of the area. His hobby all through school, the Marine Corps and to this day, was collecting butterflies and the woods and fields of NC were just a butterfly paradise. I stayed here in this area when I got out of the Marine Corps, because this area reminded me of the coast of New Jersey where he grew up back in the 60’s. In 1992 he went back to NJ to attend a funeral of a nephew who had accidentally shot himself (playing Wyatt Earp), and decided to take his wife through the hood where he grew up. When he was there it was a rural area, with small strip malls, farm fields. Now he had no idea where he even was. It had totally changed, endless strip malls and subdivisions. The boundaries between towns were totally erased. You couldn’t tell when you left one town and entered another. It was so depressing. It brought a tear to my eye; what happened to my world. It only survives in my memory anymore. I hope Morehead City and Carteret County will be somehow be able to hang on to its ambiance, its character, so that 50 years down the road when some of our kids come back here, they won’t be saying ‘My God, what happened to my world?’ That is what BOB wants to pass on – keep Morehead Morehead and don’t let it turn into another Myrtle Beach, SC. ERIC said like maybe Harkers Island. BOB said even Harkers Island has changed drastically. Have you seen all those big fancy homes there now? Several other changes to the area in recent years were mentioned.

FRED DECKER said there was a piece in the paper today about Pat (McElraft) and Jean (Preston) about the award they won. (being conservative) It is the second year they have won this prestigious award. They explained their campaign support (campaign contributions) quickly. HOWARD said it is on the front page of the Jacksonville paper, an excellent article. Be sure to read it. Fred said that she had received a 39 cent donation and she had included it.

HOWARD told BOB ‘speaking about when you first came here, Peggy worked in payroll at Cherry Point in 1954. They paid the marines in cash. Those marines when they came here, were constantly cussing about why would anyone want to live in this God forsaken place. A lot of them, if they are still alive, are still around here. You couldn’t run them off. PEGGY said she would get so angry at the way they talked about her home here on the coast.

BOB recognized a couple of ladies that had arrived late. They were Kelly Gordon and Angela Murphy. BOB invited them to come back. They live in Craven County (Havelock). Both their husbands are marines.

RUTH PARKER reminded BOB that we had made arrangements to meet on August 16 in Cape Carteret, and hadn’t we invited Mr. Horton to come and speak with us. BOB asked ERIC to please contact Mr. Horton and try to arrange another date.

ERIC held up a small cup (usually used for pills in the hospital) with a small pill in it, and said, We have all heard about Cut, Cap, and Balance and all the arguments surrounding it. Well, he and his wife had had an argument last night and this was his cut, cap, and balance ‘ his supper’. She used to be a Democrat but is now a “fiscal” conservative. He is thinking about getting her to go back to being a Democrat. This is what you call deficit spending.

With that, BOB adjourned the meeting at 7:00 pm.

ERIC reported that he had attended the Carteret County Board of Commissioners meeting last night.  The school budget that they approved was a little higher than what they had initially proposed – $18,257,000.00 and they went ahead and increased it to $19,257,000.00.  This was partly due to the gas costs for the buses.  They did do one other thing on this – allow a contingency fund of $500,000.00 which will be managed by the county commissioners and if the school board needs additional money they will have to put in an application for that money and it will be reviewed on a case by case basis.  The board also asked the school to submit quarterly financial reports to them.  It appears that some additional money has been found ($5.5 million) surplus from somewhere.  ERIC said he did not know if this was a result from some stimulus money they had sitting somewhere, but that was the amount that came out in the meeting.  More information will probably come out later.  KEN said “Maybe that is what he (Novey) had left after he fired all those teachers.”  (laughter)  ERIC said you could not ask any questions.  It was very brief.  The other good news is they did not increase the county budget from last year.  (applause)  ERIC feels that all our letters to the editor, phone calls, etc. helped.  The Board of Commissioners held their ground.  HOWARD GARNER said “Now we need to thank them!”  (agreement)  ERIC said maybe we should have a letter written from the TEA Party thanking them for being fiscally responsible for their role in this.  Someone asked about the C4 group and ERIC said we were not through with the C4 group yet; the head of C4 is now head of the group fighting the proposed sulfur plant.  Someone asked, “What was the deal on the surplus money discovered from the schools?” ERIC said he really could not elaborate on that, since he did not understand the situation himself.  He understands that the schools (school board) carry money over from year to year; however, he was unable to ask any questions there.  The board presented their information and went immediately into closed session.  Question was raised, “How can we find out more information about this?”  ERIC said he thought we could call the school system or call the county commissioners, and say, “Look I heard something about a $5.5 million school surplus and I am just trying to understand what it is”.  ERIC perceives it to be just money left over.  The school board kept telling the commissioners that there was going to be an $8 million shortfall.  Question was raised, “How was this surplus discovered?”  ERIC said “They did not say.”  All he heard was a little tidbit about it, so yes he thinks we should look into it; maybe even call the newspaper to find out what they know about it.  KEN asked “Did the commissioners bring it up in the meeting or did the schools?”  ERIC said the commissioners brought it up.  He thinks the county’s accounting department some how got a hold of this budget and just tore it to shreds.
HOWARD asked if he meant the school systems budget.  ERIC said “yes”.  ERIC said he didn’t know how they found it; maybe it was money in this bank and that bank, here and there.
The reason everyone was so interested was some members had read in the paper that in Greensboro they also had found a surplus of $6 million.  ERIC said it was more than that they had said they were $30 million in the hole, and ended up with a $10 million in surplus.  It is the consensus that this is going on all over the state.  ERIC said this is true but you always have to have some monies in reserve for emergencies.  While part of the money may be that, he couldn’t swear to it, since they did not specify where it was from or what it had been for.  Member said about 15 or 20 years ago Wake County was complaining about how they never had enough money in the coffers to even fuel the school buses, etc.   Come to find out about a month or two before the dead line came and they had to do something about that deadline deficit, they found a $6 million surplus that they had set back for rainy days.  So he is thinking this stuff goes on all the time, they just don’t want people to know about it.  ERIC said the good news is our commissioners looked into it, said OK, maybe some expenses have gone up, like gas, so therefore the increase.  And they did instill the emergency contingency fund, so that if the schools need additional funds, they have to come to the commissioners, which is good.  Maybe we can have a better handle on school funds.
WAYNE WILLIS said someone was here at one of our meetings six months or so ago talking about the state budget and same problems with shortfalls, in the hole $3 billion.  The guy (can’t remember who it was) said that out of some piece of money that Governor Bev Perdue had that wasn’t on the table, (in a drawer somewhere), several millions of dollars, and she could dip into that money and do whatever was wanted and didn’t have to go through all the legislature, etc.  ERIC said ‘on top of that Robin Comer said Novey has been talking about laying off teachers.  That was their argument.  If you don’t give us the money, we lay off people.  Commissioner Comer said if you review your budget, you’ll find you have more than enough money to pay these teachers; you will not have to lay even one off.  ERIC said from what he had seen the schools have not been very responsible in handling their money.  HOWARD said they haven’t for years; this is nothing new.

PCS –
ERIC said if you haven’t read the newspaper in the last 2 or 3 weeks, you have missed out on a lot of good articles about the PCS situation.  EULA PARKIN said how did we like PCS’s nice insert in Sunday’s paper.  That must have cost a bundle.  ERIC said the General Manager of PCS  (the one that runs the plant and oversees all operations) called him and he had a nice little conversation with him.   ERIC told him, ‘What he was telling him was a lot different from what the local scientists, doctors, etc., had been saying’.  The Manager said he would be willing to come and talk to our group; so, if we have an interest, we can do that.  He did not accept the invitation, because he (the Manager) will be speaking to the crowd Friday.  KEN said he had heard from Pat McElraft about the meeting, and that PCS did not have to have this meeting.  They really should have already had the meeting  early-on while they were doing the environmental assessment, but they didn’t.  A public meeting is not required under an environmental assessment.  Somebody in the state had to make the decision and say, ‘well all you got to do is an environmental assessment, you don’t need to do a whole environmental impact statement’, which would have required a public hearing.  Question was raised ‘did anyone know why the decision was made to bring this to Morehead City rather than keep it in Aurora.  It would appear that it would be more costly to ship the phosphate to Morehead, process it and then return it to Aurora.’  ERIC said he had asked the Manager that question, but he had not really answered it.  ERIC said he had flat out asked him why they wanted to build here, why not in Aurora right near their facility already in operation.  With no actual response, ERIC concluded that they were having a lot of problems in Aurora, and the reason they don’t want to do it there, is because they are coming close to wearing out their welcome there.  The meeting, previously referred to, is this Friday, July 29, 6:00 pm, in the West Carteret school auditorium.  But ERIC thinks the turnout might be so great that they may have to have it in the gym and move the bleachers, which will then accommodate about 2,000 people.  Someone asked why not the Civic Center?  ERIC said the Civic Center is not available and that is why they are doing it at West Carteret High.  Remember 6:00 pm, Friday, July 29, if anyone is interested in attending.

SCHOOL STANDARDS –
ERIC said for several weeks he has been investigating and writing articles to the newspaper about the quality of education our children is getting.   Since 2005 seven schools have dropped in their ratings.  In an article published in the last ten days in the Carteret Times, they also pointed out that only six of our eighteen schools made the AYP (annual year performance) ratings set by the federal government.  The year before, they made them all.   Something to be said here folks, I don’t think we are getting the bang for our bucks.  I don’t know if you noticed but we are the number 12 county in the state, in how much citizens pay per child.  We are paying almost a $1,000 bucks more than most counties per child.  The state is still something like 47 out of 50.  I don’t think we are getting our monies worth, I’m sorry.  I think our educational standards are slipping.  I think teachers are more interested in passing the kids on the tests than really teaching the fundamentals of math, reading and writing.  Someone at a recent meeting said that the schools were now letting the children take the tests several times until he or she passes.  After one of the meetings he, ERIC, had spoken to, the principal of a county school came up to talk with him; since he had mentioned that that school was substandard, and she didn’t like that too much.  She asked ‘where are you getting your numbers from?’  So I pulled out a stack of printouts, handed them to her and told her that her school web site says so.  When she started looking at it, she said well you know they changed the test in 2007.  ERIC said ‘Welllll’, if you had been teaching the basics of principles of reading, writing and arithmetic, the kid should have been prepared, it shouldn’t make any difference in which test you use as long as you teach the principles.  So tell the truth, you are teaching the test, right; you are teaching the test aren’t you?  She finally admitted he was right.’ (Where- upon someone in the TEA Party group spoke up about the scandal in Georgia where the teachers have even changed the students’answers.  Others said ‘don’t bet on it not happening here in Carteret.  ERIC said he had demanded they post the overall scores per teacher.  So, if you were a first grade teacher they post your scores on reading, writing, and arithmetic.  ABC’s as they are called.  Not each student’s performance but the overall class performance.  The response he got back was they could not do that, because it violates the confidentiality of the teacher.  Question?  How are we supposed to find out what the kids are doing if we can not find out what the teacher is doing.  How can we evaluate each teacher as to the job he/she is doing.  We can’t do it.  If they are just teaching the test and every kid taking the test makes a good grade, the teacher could still be the lousiest teacher in the world and still we wouldn’t know.  That is the reason ERIC wants the grades posted.  If you are doing your job, you should have nothing to hide.  EULA, said as a former teacher, she finds it depends on the students and their parents.  The best year she ever had, the majority of the kids had a mother and a father who had higher than a grade school or middle school education.  The kids would come in with reports that would boggle her mind because they had the support of their parents.  Without the parents behind the students, the teacher can only do so much.   ERIC said true, the parents are somewhat to blame.  ERNIE GUTHRIE said the primary, elementary and middle school students are falling behind and by the time they get into high school they just get pushed on.  And that is what is happening.  He’s not blaming it on the teachers in the lower grades, but in a way he is.  ERIC said the only way he could come up with anything is to test the kids.  He has been before the county commissioners and asked that they do independent testing on kids in the 4th in reading and writing.  Those are the two most important (math is important, don’t get him wrong) but if they can’t read and they can’t write, they’re ruined.  A member recommended that when a kid comes into school they be tested on their reading, writing and math skills, and then you can judge what they have learned at the end of the year.  Then you know if Susie over here and Johnny over there are slow or have a learning problem, and you know where to place the emphasis.  PAT said she understands they do have this type of testing in the schools.  They do it at the beginning of the year to determine where they are.  And then they take the test again in the middle of the year.  If you have a slow student, it shows up, then you can pull teachers in and you can have certain classes just for those students.  PAT said they already do that.  They have teachers who work with those type of students.  When we went to school, we did not have a music teacher, art, PE, guidance counselors, or any other specialized teachers.   Our home room teacher was it.  Look at the school day today.  It is totally interrupted and broken up.  A teacher told her that just as you get started with something, the students have to go leave for another subject.  It is all about making kids feel better about themselves, and we don’t want them to feel different.  It’s all this PC (political correctness) out there, so what they do is put these kids, with all kinds of problems, into a class together and the teacher has to deal with it.  Instead of taking these kids with problems (including students who have English for a second language), put them into another classroom.  ERIC said he understands that all kids are different; some really excel, others are average, and some just get by.  PAT said they are afraid to “tag ‘em”.  KEN said PAT is right, it is the PC stuff that comes from the top down, (federal, state, etc).  You have requirements being passed down from the federal government to the state government to the local schools.  They should let the local schools run their local schools, because as you start getting further and further up they start worrying about all this ‘touchy/feely’ that screws the whole system up.  PAT said if you have a day that is not interrupted, a teacher can teach a lot more in a shorter amount of time.  They currently have so many interruptions in a day, it is hard to maintain consistency of subjects.  EULA said she knew of a student that graduated from West Carteret High School that could not read.  ERIC said this was his fear.  I see the slope going down like this – It’s been going down for years, but the merging of slow students with higher level of learning students has really destroyed the class.  The smarter students get bored and lose interest, while the teacher is forced to spend more time with the slower student.  PEGGY said “we are dumbing them down”.  ERNIE said one of the reasons for the PC is called the Columbine Scare.  Because if we stigmatize students with being slow or a problem, then they may turn around and one day bring a gun to school and shoot everyone in sight.  PC was another reason for integration.  It was thought that the whites had better teachers and so therefore the schools became integrated giving all students access to the ‘better’ teachers.  PAT said even Thomas Sole felt this was a bad idea.  It put more pressure on the black children to have to try to at least keep up.  Today, we find more and more the blacks are moving back to wanting their own schools, communities, etc.  They are more comfortable that way.  You put a bunch of people with different cultures, different ways, etc., they do not understand each others differences and therefore are uncomfortable and desire to return to their own.  ERNIE said ‘the ruling class’s’ idea is if they can get everyone; all races, ethnicity, etc., crammed together and make them all alike, then we come closer to their idea of one world.  ERIC said the thing we need to remember is to keep the pressure on our schools, and make sure our kids
get a good education.  If we are going to have to pay for it, we should demand it.  It had been mentioned about someone going to the school board and get an agenda of what the schools were teaching.  You will have a hard time doing that.  ERIC said they have a lot of pressure on them now and know that people are watching their every move.  KEN said the curriculum is made out and given to the kids.  Unless you have a kid in school, you can not just automatically get a copy.  KEN said the school has a very extensive web site and maybe it is posted there.  The web site is hard to navigate, which has been one of his objections to it.  PAT said the agendas are posted there.  KEN said he thought we could find a lot of the stuff we were looking for there.  He said he does know if you pick up the phone and call Tabbie Nance’; that she will send you whatever you want.  Everything he has asked for from her she has complied except on one occasion.  Why she couldn’t that one time, he did not know.  Doesn’t even remember what the topic was now.  ERIC said one time when he had called for information (not Tabbie) he had been informed that the system they had was very archaic and hard to get the info from.  The system might be at least 15 years old, at least.  ERIC said the responses he had gotten would be posted on our web site, so take a look at it.  Personally he thinks we should get more involved in our school system.
WAYNE WILLIS said when he was working on the beginnings of the history game he has designed, one of his biggest questions was “what is going on now?” in the school system; so he went and talked to the Asst. Superintendent Matt Bottoms.  Mr. Bottoms asked him to hurry and get that thing on DVD so they can use it for history testing in the class rooms.  WAYNE asked him what was in the book that they were teaching history from now.  Mr. Bottoms called the Principal at East Carteret and told them to give Wayne anything he wanted/needed to help with developing the program.  WAYNE didn’t want them to give him the books, just loan them to him.  They gave him three books that were essentially what he thought of as Atlas type books, and the Encyclopedia Britannica; which is basically what they were.  There was very little of the most important things that should be taught to be found in the thousand or so pages in each.  No wonder they are not teaching history if this is what they are using to teach.  It was boring and not worth even having.  The books probably cost fifty or seventy-five dollars apiece and it was obvious none of the kids were going to read 3000 pages of that.  They only take the subject once a semester during their junior year of high school.  Bottom line is if you want to know what is being taught in the schools, then go to the school and request to borrow a copy of the text books they are using.  If you talk nice to them and just say you want to see what is going on they might loan you a copy or say they don’t have them, but they do.  They always have a few extras of the books they are using whether it is a math, science, or whatever.  He thinks it is a good idea for anyone who has the time to do it.  Then we can see what is supposedly being taught and the quality of information available.   ERNIE said when he went to school, they did not go through the whole book, usually only about a third of the information and material.  Just the basic stuff.  In doing further study after he graduated he found a statement by Thomas Jefferson that he definitely had not heard in school…’That two equal races can not live under the same government and that government last for any length of time.’ You will not see this in any text book being used.  It has been left out.

VETTING THE CANDIDATES –
ERIC said on August 2, 2011, Mayor Jerry Jones will be speaking to us, presenting his platform as to why he should be re-elected at Mayor of Morehead City.
On August 16, 2011, Councilman David Horton will be presenting his platform as to why he should be elected Mayor of Morehead City.

CONSTITUTION WEEK –
NANCY BOCK said in 2004 Congress passed a law that required the public schools to teach the Constitution.  Last year in 2010 someone in Florida went to their school board and asked them about the law and wanted to know what that school’s plan was for teaching the Constitution and the school did not have any plans, nor did they even know about the law.  The TEA Party Patriots have come up with a plan that involves three letters.  She has written the first letter on June 7.  She did not do it as a TEA Party Patriot, although she did mention what the TEA Party had found out in Florida last year.  On July 6 she got an email from Tabbie Nance that said she had brought this to Dr. Novey’s attention and would share with Matt Bottoms.  The next step will be the second letter.  She wants to know how we want to pursue this.  If we are interested we can go to the TEA Party Patriots page and there is a link to US History Constitution.  You can go there and see about the letter she wrote and read more about it.  Constitution week is September 17.  They have some leeway; they can either teach it the week before or the week after.  The program can be broken down according to age group.  She would like some input as to how we should pursue this; go to the central office to determine if they are going to order this material; if they are going to give it to their teachers; and give the teachers time to review it.  She wants to know if there is anyone who is passionate enough to join Kenny and her in pursuing this project.  WAYNE said the superintendent of schools has the option of what books to buy.  In other words you do not have to go to the State Board of Education and let it filter down through the many layers of bureaucracy.  You can go right to the schools and they have a budget for that.  ERIC wanted to know if the second letter should come from the TEA Party.  NANCY said she had had no response from any one except Tabbie.  If we don’t hear from them soon, we need to go down and tell them we sent them information on Constitution Week and have not heard from them and would like to know where they stand.  NANCY said if they already have something in play then they should be able to answer that letter right now.  NANCY said maybe we could give it another week or two.  KEN said he thought she should at least call Tabbie and let her know we have not heard from anyone else.  ERIC said he could call as Vice President of the TEA Party and let them know that this is one of our core values and teaching our children about the Constitution is important to us.  He could back NANCY up that way and he didn’t mind doing that.  ERIC told NANCY, why don’t you give them a call and he also will call sometime this week.  NANCY said she would call and then let the TEA Party know what she had found out.

REPORT ASSIGNMENTS –
JIM NALITZ said he had gone on line to every web page of every school in the county, and had accumulated information on number of teachers (counted by name and what they taught).  Of the 727 teachers reported he had found only 550 teachers who were actually teaching kids.  When they did this study they excluded principals, vice principals, assistants, social workers, directors, technology, guidance councilors, that sort of thing, and that is how they came up with 550 teachers.  With the 720, they break down their staff into certified and non-certified.  Non-certified is custodians, cafeteria workers, and that sort.  Every body else is certified.  That is how they come up with 720 teachers.  The difference is if you’re looking at 720 teachers then they come up with 1 to 12 (1 teacher to 12 students).  If you look at 550 you come up with 1 to 15 or 16 (closer to 16).  It is not that big of a difference, so as ERIC pointed out it doesn’t matter when you are comparing Carteret to 99 other counties because they are also counting it the same way.  JIM said someone had mentioned about teachers teaching in different schools.  Down east we have 4 teachers who have to switch between Harkers Island and Smyrna, and they are art, music, band, and that sort of thing.  They have PE teachers, EC teachers (which are ‘exceptional children’) IG (gifted children) and then they have Title One (schools that have low reading scores).  These are the pull out teachers; the ones that when you are teaching a class, these teachers come in and pull out 3 or 4 of your kids.  Teachers have to arrange their schedules around all of this.  It is not a good way to run a class room.

MISC. –
KEN reported that he had received an email from Pastor Montague and he is thinking about returning to Carteret County.  He is looking for property for a church probably in the Morehead City/Newport area.  If anyone knows of anything, please let KEN know so he can pass it on to Pastor Montague.

STEVE BEST reported he had another video and would show it after the meeting for anyone interested.

Discussed how we are going to handle these city council and mayoral elections.  There are 8 areas but only three have positions contested with multiple candidates running and a small number of TEA Party Patriot members in those areas who might be interested.
KEN said while we are talking about this, he wanted to report that he had been looking into having a TEA Party meeting in the Cape Carteret area.  He has secured the first and third Tuesdays for August and September at the Western Carteret Community Center to have a TEA Party type meeting to see if we can draw any people from down there.  If it doesn’t do anything in that time frame then we may have to rethink it, but he is going to try to put something on the web site and try to get an editorial in the newspaper, just to let the people know about it.  Thinking about 7:00pm.  It is not a restaurant so you may want to eat beforehand.
Back to candidates debating.  ERIC thinks since we have several city council positions in the running, he would like to have them all there for questioning.  Only problem is we have 38 candidates (city council – 6 different towns that have more candidates than positions available.  That is a lot of candidates.  Several said that they are not interested in any other town’s election but their own.  KEN said every jurisdiction has their own local issues that people are concerned with.  To him that rules out a big ‘league of women type debate’.  The people of Cape Carteret aren’t going to debate those from Morehead City.  If they were running for state office, it would be different.  It is up to our members from the various towns to go to any meetings of the candidates, determine which candidate most likely fits the TEA Party core values and report back to the group.  ERIC said the reason he was looking into this situation was the last election.  We were a little late in vetting the candidates and there were some we knew nothing about.  KEN said yes, but there were also state, federal, and judges; they weren’t local positions.  His feeling is we have enough to deal with at the state and federal level, to be dealing with townships within Carteret County is wasted time.  It is perfectly normal to get involved in county politics cause all of us live in the same county, but all of us do not live in Emerald Isle or Morehead City so therefore there is a lack of interest in local township elections, other than our own.  To conduct a debate of all the county candidates will be too time consuming and involve an awful lot of time and work.  Look at all that went into the July 4th parade float.  ERIC said he thought we had done great on getting the float together.  KEN said, maybe, but, look how long it took to just determine what trailer we were going to use.  ERIC said he has found out that the mayors determine on what the city councilmen are informed about.  They control the paperwork that goes to them.  Took a vote and decided not to hold a debate for city councilmen or mayors.  Mayor Jones and David Horton have already been invited to attend our meetings so we will just go with them.  How much time do we want to give them?  ERIC thinks 15 minutes to explain his platform and 15 minutes of questions and answers equating to one half hour of our time.  WAYNE said whatever we do it is going to be overshadowed by this sulfur deal.  It is not over yet.  HOWARD said he did not think we should solicit the other Mayoral candidates but if one of them were to come to us and ask to speak to us, we should not refuse.  Let’s don’t go after them, but if they come to us, don’t tell them no.  ERIC said the main reason we are vetting Morehead candidates is because of the sulfur situation.  HOWARD said it is not just Morehead, it is a concern of all of Carteret County.  KEN said, the way he was understanding our position was, there would be no debates, either mayors or councilmen.  Only the two already invited and we are going to stay out of the little local kind of things unless some come to us and asks to speak to our group.  Then we can decide on that.
LOU KUKULINSKI reminded us that Sam Sanford will be packing boxes to be mailed to our troops overseas and needs help.  He will be at the strip mall across from Trucker’s Toy Store at 9:00 tomorrow (Wednesday). Go around to the back alley.   He hopes to have 100 boxes ready for mailing to our troops in Afghanistan and will be at the Morehead City Post Office at 8:00 the next day (Thursday morning).  Boxes cost $12.95 to mail.  Requests that everyone interested in helping with postage please stop by; pick up a box and customs form, take it into the post office and mail.  They will be there until all the boxes are mailed.
EULA PARKIN asked if anyone knew who Robert Spencer was.  She checked the Wikipedia and found out that he was born in 1962.  He is a practicing Greek Catholic.  His grandparents were forced to migrate from the area that is now Turkey, because they were Christians.  He graduated from UNC, Chapel Hill in 1986 with an MA in religious studies.  He rejects that all Muslims are violent people and his writings have been condemned as hate speech.  The Truth about Mohammad is one of his books.  Today it came out in the Times that he was supposedly the one that inspired the Oslo murders and is being sued and will be taken to trial.  Robert Horowitz is going to defend Robert Spencer.  The most this nut, that committed the murders, will be able to get is 21 years, regardless of how many people he killed.  In Oslo he can do the 21 years and then come back and be tried again and get another 5 years, over and over.  The Jihadish actually took credit for the killings in the beginning and then backed off and said no they were not responsible.
ERIC asked if anyone else had anything to report.  ROY MUSSER said Obama called our bluff yesterday and asked everyone to call in to their representatives and let them know how we feel.  From what has been reported, there were a tremendous amount of calls made, but most were telling our representatives to “hold their ground”, “no increased taxes”.  Not exactly what Obama was thinking, Roy didn’t believe.   Obama is still spouting the scare tactic that the seniors are not going to get their Social Security check, and the troops will not be paid if Congress does not lift the debt ceiling.  ROY said a lawyer came on the program he was listening to and said that was illegal; that according to the Constitution, he was not supposed to incite fear into the American public.  There’s also a law on the books right now that they can’t have these meetings behind closed doors; everything is to be out in the open.  KEN said he has been emailing Beynor that he should be holding these meetings in the open and would thereby have more supporting him.  KEN said he did not understand the rational of having these meetings behind closed doors. He asked if anyone had watched Hannity last night.  He had the (in)famous Bob Beckel on who called us (the TEA Party) ignorant and anarchists.  NANCY said she had read a letter to the editor discussing this stoppage of payments and she had read somewhere that said the only person who could stop social security payments is the President.   Everyone at the meeting said that was their understanding also.  NANCY said if this is true, someone needs to write a letter and inform these seniors of how they are being duped.  Steps have already been taken to make sure these payments are met, regardless of what happens to our debt ceiling.   All agreed that NANCY should write this letter.  ROY said you write it, we’ll sign it.  ERIC said he was expecting to be arrested any day for all the stands he has taken.   PEGGY asked if anyone had noticed Obama’s campaign ads which show him in the white house.  This is illegal also.  That’s not going to stop him though, nothing else has.

ERIC adjourned the meeting at 7:10pm and advised that STEVE BEST had a video, if anyone wanted to stay and watch it.

Minutes submitted by PEGGY GARNER, Secretary.

American Malady

The recent standoff in Washington’s debt talks are symptomatic of a much deeper illness within the very core of our nation. Other signs of the sickness pervade American society: rampant drug use; the soaring rate of out-of-wedlock births combined with legitimizing the murder of thousands of unborn children; a sinking economy; large numbers of able-bodied people who do not work, but live on the government dole; an entertainment industry whose wares are salacious if not pornographic; a national judiciary that seems to have abandoned common sense; and–worst of all–a president and legislature more concerned with reelection than solutions.

Dr. Charles Stanley’s sermon and book, “Turning the Tide,” urges listeners and readers to humble themselves, repent, pray for our leaders and to seek God. Not bad advice. Think about it. If those in our Congress would put aside their pride, turn from wickedness and selfishness, pray to their Maker and look for His face and His wisdom, could their differences not be resolved?

Certainly a lack of faith in God is at the heart if it, but it all boils down to an attitude of “What’s in it for me?” A professor of mine once said he believed all the world’s problems stemmed from selfishness. Never has his homespun wisdom been more true. Our man in the White House is so concerned with his reelection that he is willing to retain entitlement programs at a level that is unsustainable in order to garner for himself those left wing votes he needs to win in 2012 and blame the opposing party for the nation’s ills. Next, the Democrats want to raise the legal limit of our national debt so they can continue to spend more money than the country has or will have in the distant future; they do not seem to understand the meaning or consequences of bankruptcy. And the Republicans may be the worst of all, individually grandstanding and openly criticizing the President and his party instead of looking for and working toward bipartisan cooperation that will get us moving forward. All this because of selfishness and pride.

Think about this: a nation of 300 million is being ruled by 545 people (Executive, Legislative and Judiciary branches combined) who ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOBS.

What is needed? I could write a laundry list that would extend into the next county, but these points are immediately germane to the current situation: (1) our nation–in particular our leaders–must return to God; (2) our government at all levels must stop ruling us and serve us; (3) our government must live within its means–NO DEBT!; (4) those who serve in government positions–at all levels–must humble themselves and regard their employer as the people, not the government; (5) our contentious two-party politics must become two-party cooperation.

I believe Galatians 6:7 says it all: “A man reaps what he sows.” As a nation, if we continue to sow selfishness, that is what we will reap. If we continue to ask, “What’s in it for me?” selfishness is what we will reap. How to heal the sickness within our land? “…if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and WILL HEAL THEIR LAND.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Email from Rep. Walter Jones on Debt Ceiling, July 21, 2011

Dear Friend,

In the wake of the ongoing debate on the Federal Debt Ceiling many people have been contacting my offices asking for a good source of unbiased, current information on the subject. Frankly, our country is faced with making a selection between a number of unpleasant options, so having information upon which to judge those options is more important than ever.

How much of our current budget is being funded by taxes, and how much by new borrowing? What happens if we do not raise the debt ceiling? What happens if the debt ceiling is raised without dealing with the underlying causes of the rising debt? What happens if we default on our debt?

The House Republican leadership recently invited Jerome Powell – former Undersecretary of Treasury in the George H.W. Bush Administration – to present members of Congress with a nonpartisan debt limit analysis, and to present a fact-based look at what consequences our country will be facing without a resolution to the current budget crisis.

I am linking to the report here, so that the people of Eastern North Carolina can fully understand the magnitude of the current situation. I urge you to read the report and share this information with your friends and loved ones.

Sincerely,

J

Letter from Rep. Walter Jones, July 21, 2011

Dear Mr. Broyles:

Thank you for your recent email regarding offshore oil and gas drilling.  I appreciate you taking the time to contact me and I’m grateful for the opportunity to respond.

I, like most Americans, support offshore drilling when done under the right circumstances.  As an advocate of the federalist principles of states’ rights upon which our nation was founded, I believe strongly that states ought to have the authority to determine whether oil and gas drilling takes place off their coast, not the federal government as is currently the case.  In fact, one of the first bills I introduced in Congress would have given states that responsibility.  It is the citizens of North Carolina, not North Dakota or any other state, who are in the best position to decide whether drilling off North Carolina makes sense for North Carolinians.  I also believe that if North Carolinians decide that drilling off our coast is something that should be pursued, North Carolina ought to get the lion’s share of the royalty revenue generated by that drilling, not the federal government as is now the case.  After all, it is North Carolina that would bear the risk and expense of environmental damage stemming from an oil spill, and the state should be compensated accordingly.

I also believe that the unprecedented Gulf oil spill showed the need for comprehensive reform of America’s drilling standards and oversight.  No one wants to see that kind of devastation again, particularly those who live on or enjoy North Carolina’s Outer Banks.  That being said, I share the frustration of those concerned that the pace of the Obama Administration’s reforms in this regard has been too slow.

With that as background, as you may be aware the House of Representatives recently considered three bills dealing with offshore drilling: H.R. 1229, H.R. 1230 and H.R. 231.  I voted against each of these bills and I’d like to explain why.

H.R. 1229 would create a new system for approval of oil companies’ applications for permits to drill for oil and gas offshore.  A key feature of the bill was a requirement that if a company’s application was not approved in 60 days, it was deemed automatically approved.  While we all acknowledge that the federal government should not be slow walking drilling permits, I believe it is wrong, particularly after the Gulf oil spill, to require automatic approval of applications even if there are serious questions about whether the drilling plan presented by the oil company can be carried out in a safe, environmentally responsible.

H.R. 1230 would require the Administration to offer three Gulf of Mexico lease sales that were temporarily suspended after the Gulf oil spill.  This is being proposed even though the Interior Department has already announced plans to offer all of these lease sales later this year or early next year.  The bill would also deem the pre-Gulf oil spill environmental impact statements on these leases automatically approved.  To me, that just doesn’t make sense.  At the very least, the oil companies ought to be required to update their environmental impact statements to make sure they account for and mitigate the potential environmental damage that can result from a blowout.  Updating these statements need not take an extended period of time, but I believe it needs to be done.

H.R. 1231 would open up the Atlantic Ocean to offshore oil and gas drilling, including North Carolina.  However, it would not direct any of the royalty revenue from that drilling to North Carolina; that money would instead go to the federal government.  As I mentioned previously, I oppose this sort of top-down approach because I believe this decision ought to be made by North Carolinians, and the bulk of the revenue ought to go to North Carolina.

As you know, the topic of drilling for oil is inextricably linked to the price of gas that we all pay at the pump.  I strongly agree that drilling for more oil here in America would certainly be good for economy, and would be helpful in reducing gas prices.  That’s why it’s so frustrating that many oil companies are not drilling the leases on public land that they already own.  For example, according to an Interior Department report released on March 29, 2011, the Interior Department found that of the 38 million acres of public lands under lease, over 21 million acres (57%) are not in production or exploration.  Furthermore, of the 34 million acres already under lease offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, almost 24 million acres (70%) are inactive (i.e. neither producing or subject to approved or pending exploration or development plans).  I think we can all agree that these oil companies need to start producing on these lands, and if they don’t, they ought to step aside and let other companies step up to the plate.

Lastly, I have been very vocal about the role that Federal Reserve’s unprecedented $2 trillion money printing campaign has had in raising the price of oil and nearly every other commodity.  I have also been outspoken on the need for federal regulators to do their jobs and enforce existing statutes to reign in the excessive speculation and manipulation of the oil markets.  If you have a moment, I would encourage you to review recent statements that I have given on these topics, which can be found here:

Letter from Sen. Hagan, July 21, 2011

July 21, 2011

Dear Friend [Eric B.],

Thank you for contacting me regarding federal spending and the national debt. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this important issue.

Our mounting debt is our most pressing national priority, and Democrats and Republicans must work together to put our fiscal house in order. In the last 10 years, our national debt has nearly tripled. In fact, at our current pace, interest payments on our national debt could rise to nearly $1 trillion by 2020. These mandatory interest payments will limit funding for other national priorities, like new roads, schools, and research. With this in mind, I am working to reduce our deficit and confront our mounting debt.

During the 111th Congress, I voted to reinstate the budget principle known as “pay-as-you-go.” The principle requires legislation that would increase the deficit to be offset by measures that reduce the deficit by an equal amount. That amendment was agreed to by a vote of 60-39, and I believe it is a good start to control deficit spending. I have also supported numerous bipartisan efforts to establish a five-year cap on discretionary spending. Discretionary spending caps have a proven track record of controlling government spending and reducing the deficit.

To begin to confront our mounting debt head on, I fought for the creation of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, which President Obama created on February 18, 2010. This bipartisan commission, which was co-chaired by North Carolina’s own Erskine Bowles, produced recommendations to reduce the deficit by more than $4 trillion over the next 10 years. On December 1, 2010, the Commission published its final report, which you can read online at: http://www.fiscalcommission.gov/.

While I do not agree with everything in the report, the work of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform is evidence that common ground is possible. We must reduce spending across the board and reform our tax code to eliminate loopholes and make it fairer and simpler for everyone. I believe everything needs to be on the table, and the solution must be balanced and bipartisan.

Fiscal responsibility requires smart investments, budgeting discipline, and shared sacrifice. As a state senator, I served as co-chair of the Budget Committee and worked across the aisle to balance North Carolina’s budget for five straight years. As we work to put our fiscal house in order, we cannot neglect our obligations to our seniors or place undue burdens on working families. As Congress continues to work to reduce the deficit, I pledge to keep your thoughts and concerns in mind.

Again, thank you for contacting my office. It is truly an honor to represent North Carolina in the United States Senate, and I hope you will not hesitate to contact me in the future should you have any further questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Signature

MINUTES OF CRYSTAL COAST TEA PARTY PATRIOTS
19 JULY 2011

Meeting held at Golden Corral, Morehead City, NC
Meeting called to order at 6:02pm by President BOB CAVANAUGH
Pledge of Allegiance led by WAYNE WILLIS
Invocation was given by SCOTT CARPENTER
Number of Attendees – 34

RUTH PARKER and PAT NALITZ reported that they had gotten some information on teacher count in Carteret County.  Ruth had looked up Croatan, West and East Carteret High Schools and PAT had gotten the others.  PAT is going to take them all and check for duplications, etc. and will report next week.

STEVE BEST showed a video on Agenda 21 – (the possibility and probability are very real and scary).  BOB asked that we keep an eye out for anything that appears to fall into this type of intrusion into our lives, especially here in Carteret County, and bring it to our attention.   Ken brought up about a report that BOB had read a few weeks ago about Carroll County, Maryland.  He said that he and Diane had lived in Montgomery County Maryland for a few years and saw all through that area some of what Agenda 21 was like.  Their consulting and planning committees did things like zoning out some areas for development.  It meant that farmers couldn’t sell their land or develop it into housing areas, which devalued the price of the land.  They also designated other areas into what they called farmettes, where you could sell them in five and ten acre plots, but this too devalued your personal property.  They also devalued your property and house by the way they routed the highways and other things through there; so they used a variety of ways to control certain areas and devalue property.  His son lived in Columbia, Maryland in a planned/gated community, that was started back in the 70’s, in Howard County, which is close to Baltimore and Washington, and is highly regulated; and a carbon copy of that is already here in North Carolina in Cary.  BOB said same in Pine Knoll Shores.  Cary is so planned out that certain areas are only for shopping centers; areas have to be screened from the road; a complete manipulation of the way they handle the property and what you can do on your own property.  This type of manipulation of property is spread all over the northeastern portion of the country, but Maryland is a prime example of what is going on.  BOB said he had seen a map where they had identified wilderness areas and wanted to connect these areas with corridors so wildlife could move from one area to another.  So, in order to do that, the government is going to have to take your land away from you.  These wilderness areas are going to be set up so that no human activity will be allowed and then they plan to set up large buffer areas around these wilderness and corridor areas (where very limited human activity is allowed).  The idea is to move people into smaller areas (termed ‘stack ‘em and pack ‘em), putting them in these high rise building units and keep the appropriated lands off-limits except to wildlife.  True, BOB said he hated to see dead foxes, rabbits, squirrels, ‘possums, even deer, etc., on the highway; but this, he felt was an overkill.  If they pull this thing off, while it may be decades in the completion, it will be like a cancer, unless stopped, will continue to grow and invade our lives significantly as time goes by.  It will certainly have a big influence on what our grandkids can do, where they can live, and other things like that.

BOB acknowledged WAYNE WILLIS and his guest Matthew McCastle to discuss the progress of the game he had originated.  WAYNE said before he got into the game, he wanted to bring up something he had read in the paper about renewable energy, wind, sun and biofuel.  Some of the stimulus money is paying for; and, in spite of the fact that Duke Energy had done a study on the windmills and determined that it would cost 25 cent a kilowatt instead of 10 cent, which we are now paying, the crowd up north said we are going to have it whether we want it or not.  They know best.  The pamphlet he was referring to was published by Coastal Federation.  HOWARD GARNER said that should tell us something right there.  Discussion on windmills with a couple of members under the impression that windmills had been built in Bettie.  Someone tried to get some built there but was stopped.  We may think this is just a pie in the sky right now, but it is a big possibility for the future.  WAYNE recommended we all read the pamphlet he had gotten from the library put out by the Coastal Federation.
WAYNE then introduced Matthew as the young man who was working to get WAYNE’s game up and running.  He informed us that Matthew almost had the software ready.  Matthew said it was pretty simple and easy to use; start out with a deck of cards with questions that it asks you to answer; every answer you answer right you get 10 points, and when you reach 100 you win.  You will be able to play it on pretty much any computer.  WAYNE said as soon as it was completed he will have copies made and bring them in to demonstrate it to us.  BOB wanted to know if WAYNE had a time line on that.  Matthew said he hated to say, because he was working two jobs right now and did not have the opportunity to work full time on finishing up the project.  SCOTT and SONYA CARPENTER said either they had missed the meetings where we had discussed this game or it was before their time, and would like to know the details.  WAYNE said, since history was not being taught in the schools, as in the past, many of our children today didn’t even know who our first president was; so he had come up with a game you could play on the computer, to help teach in an interesting way, history to our children of today.  It had started out as a board game, but had evolved into a computer game.  It is in two parts.  Ten years with 5 questions in each year.  There is a deck of information cards (as he calls them) of what happened world wide.  He calls the game ‘Patriots or Potentates’.  ‘Which are you’?  Questions will go back to Plato and Aristotle, the first great republic.  It is multiple choice questions, not discussion or essay type.   You get 4 choices; one the absolutely right answer, one that is almost right, one is ridiculously wrong if you know anything at all about the subject and the 4th one is a joke.  The question is what is the most important thing that happened during this period of time and the subject is in the questions; example. Castro…his name will be mentioned two or three times.  So, you know the answer is about Castro, and you just have to determine which answer is the correct one.  Last fall he had talked to the Assistant Superintendent of Schools about using something like this in the classroom and was told “Hurray, hurry up and get that on a computer disc so they can teach history again in the class rooms.”  He hopes the idea will spread all over the US.  His first idea was to market it through the TEA Party, because it was obvious we all wanted our kids to learn; so, he thought we would encourage others to try it.  The deal we had made (WAYNE and TEA Party) was an oral not written agreement; that said the TEA Party would get 10% of the sales generated as a fund raiser.  Another use that has come up is ….a friend of his who has written books about cancer,  people who have it and care givers, victims, survivors, etc., has a connection with Duke University and she wants to take this software and put in questions about cancer, and make it something to educate people about cancer.  This could be very beneficial because early treatment is most important in keeping people alive.  She thinks this could be a very important tool using his format.  He hopes to get the show on the road as soon as possible.

BOB then asked ERIC BROYLES to report on his attendance to the Board of Commissioners meeting last night and his reading up on the Sulfur Plant that has been proposed to be built in Morehead near the Port.
Eric said he had also attended the Morehead City Council meeting which was last Tuesday.  Both meetings were packed, standing room only.  At both of those sessions there were about 20 speakers, scientists, doctors, chemists, etc.  The bottom line is ‘this project is not fit for Morehead City and Beaufort’.  It represents health risks, economical risks (tourists, our major source of income), and environmental risks.  This company is a foreign based company.  They bring nothing to the table except maybe 15 to 20 jobs.  Other than that they are not paying us any taxes or any other contribution except damage to our community.  Up until now they were only transporting not processing, which was fine.  The risk for that was a lot lower than what they are now proposing to do.  They want to build two 150 foot (higher than the bridge) smoke stacks with scrubbers to help alleviate the odors, two big domes to hold all this sulfur in.  By changing the status of the sulfur it becomes very explosive.  All this is going to be done right up against a highly populated residential area.   In fact, not far (only a mile and a half) from where he, ERIC, lives.  He would hate to see an accident occur.  A short while ago the Port had an accident occur and they had to clear out a area of about 10 blocks of Morehead City, and an accident with this sulfur product will be far greater.  They will be processing 10 times what they have been processing but now it will be in molten form, which is highly volatile.  He said a doctor had spoken at the meeting last night about the increase in breathing/lung problems here that have quadrupled from the smoke from the Onslow county fire and this could be even worse.  ERIC said he did not see how, even with the scrubbers in the smoke stacks, it would alleviate the odor of rotten eggs, which is what processed sulfur smells like.  If you have ever smelled a propane tank, you know how it smells like rotten eggs; well that is what this is going to smell like except it will be 10 to 12 worse.  It will destroy property values, may as well consider your property value 50% less than now.  If you think your taxes will go down, don’t bet on it, since they will need to raise them to keep things going, but you won’t be able to sell your house for what you might have thought you would.  He had talked to the second in command with Air Quality Control and since this person owned property here in the county it was kinda hard for him to make any straight comments about the problem.  He does understand our concerns though, but ERIC still wants to know who is going to monitor our air quality.   Air Quality Control won’t.  They said their monitoring is “sniff, sniff” the sniff test.  Well, ERIC, as far as he is concerned feels we could be in pretty bad shape by the time they sniff things out.  CLAYTON GILLIKIN said he had worked down to the Port and the Air Traffic Control group was forever coming to check out the wood chip shed.  All kinds of chemicals were used and during hot weather especially, the odor was horrendous.  He said they would come directly into the shaker house and do an air quality check.  If he got a bad reading, he would go outside the building, 50 feet or so, and take another reading.  Then he would throw the first reading in the trash can.  CLAYTON saw what was going on, so he started retrieving the discarded readings for about 6 months.  He put them in a plastic bag and hid them right there on the Port.  He told someone what he had been doing and said one of these days he was going to turn them in.  Apparently someone overheard him and they disappeared that night.  ERIC said he was told each municipality received an air quality control form from the Environmental agency back in December.  The comment period ended about the end of January.  As far as he could tell no comments were entered.  They were not required by law to publish it anywhere, except on the Environmental web site, which 99.99% of the public has never heard about.  They said they had complied with the law and nothing can be done now to stop it.  He asked the question last night with the commissioners if an economic impact study had been done; or an overall health impact study done.  It did not seem right that they could just come into a community and destroy it without the public being more informed.  We would not have found out yet if the permit requested by CAMA had not come to light.  All these town and county officials were asleep at the wheel and now with all the mail being sent to them in opposition, they are having to backtrack.

BOB asked ROY MUSSER if he went to the meeting tonight and he said yes.  Everything is done except the CAMA permit with two weeks before approval.  Then we have 20 days to oppose this.  They had their lawyers from Raleigh at the meeting.  The Realtors were there saying they were already getting people backing out of home buying agreements.  BOB said none of that impacts CAMA’s assessment.  They said that this sulfur’s site will not be on their perimeters, so they OK’ed their perimeter, as if the odors would stay right over the sulfur plant and not spread out over any other areas.  From all he could find out it is a done deal.  He heard of a project in Virginia along the same lines, but even though they fought, if finally became so expensive they had to drop their case and lost.  Our only hope is to keep fighting and holding them off as long as we can.  Maybe they will decide it’s not worth it and back away.  That’s all we can do, because we really can’t stop them.  Question was asked if anyone at the meeting spoke in favor of the sulfur plant and the answer was no; everyone was opposed.  ERIC said no one at the two meetings he had attended had anyone spoken in favor either.  He said he had seen one article in the paper by the State Port, and also the advertisement in the paper in favor.  HOWARD said he thought it was kind of strange that they could slip this through and gave the example that right beside our land on the Nine Foot Road is a bar pit for digging dirt.  To dig dirt the owner has to have a mining permit, and every time he wants to change that permit, he has to send us and all the adjoining property owners a registered letter, so we can comment.  It is strange that there is so much more permitting processes to dig dirt than to do this.  ERIC said the city council zoning does not address mining; therefore the zoning for this is not right.  ROY said he builds houses and anytime they need a CAMA permit it takes three months before they can start that house.  A man who spoke at the meeting ROY was at said he was trying to build a marina and it took him a year and a half to get a permit and they did this (got their approval) in three days!!!  BOB said from what he had seen the CAMA permit was normally the first one you get and with this project it was the last one gotten.  It appears they tried to get everything lined up and in place first.  He does not believe that the politicians (regardless of what they say) did not know about this until now.  ROY said they were all acting upset with each other that they had not been informed prior.  ERIC said he couldn’t find fault with the councilmen, because any information they receive is passed down by the mayor and manager.    If the councilmen were not kept informed; then the mayor, who is up for reelection, was not doing his job.  ERIC said the city council of Beaufort has voted against this sulfur project and the Town of Morehead City also has voted against.  The Economical Development Council has now voted against this.  Last night the county commissioners voted against this, also.  Messages are being sent to all levels of government throughout North Carolina that we are NOT in favor of this project.  BOB wanted to know if this was a state, county or town decision.  ERIC said state since this was state property (the port).  KEN said the Environment Impact Statement was a state document and they would have had to do that, in order to get it through, (sounds like an Easley thing, just like Cannons Gate where they told the regulators ‘there’s an EIS coming in; get it out as quickly as possible and get it approved).  EIS’s have to be published, public comment, and a follow up period where they address all these comments.  They cannot build that thing without an EIS.  Apparently they already have gotten that approved.  In order to slip that through, they had to have some high level state help.  It was asked why they had to ship the sulfur here for processing – why not keep the whole process in Aurora?  It looked like a waste of time, money and effort to ship it to Morehead, process and ship back to Aurora.  ERIC said it was apparently because they have had many problems with the town of Aurora and can not get anymore cooperation.  WAYNE said when the subject of windmills came up, the commissioners agreed that structures over a certain height were not allowed.  Why can’t they do something like that now with the 150’ smoke stacks.  Can’t because it belongs to the state.  State is probably exempt from county regulations.  CLAYTON questioned the 150’ smoke stacks right on the end of the Beaufort airport runway.  Looks like something could be done to stop it.  There was much discussion on the hazards of molten sulfur and the processing.  BOB said he would like to have a chemist come and talk to us about these hazards being bantered around.  Which of them are true and which are not.  ROY said he knew a lady who was a chemist and might agree to come and talk with us.  Since we have a resident chemist in KEN LANG, BOB asked him about some of the comments made here to night as to the volatility of molten sulfur.  He explained the difference in the two types of acid discussed.  Some mixed with water are highly volatile and others are not.  We should be aware of what we are talking about.  When you mix water with molten sulfur, it will be unpleasant, but not create a Chernoble.  We need to be careful about fear mongering.
BOB said while this is a subject of interest to citizens of Carteret County, it does not really address our core values, but it is a reason for the TEA Party to get involved in the upcoming election of this year 2011 (local government).  David Horton, (Morehead town commissioner) came and spoke to us a few weeks ago about the excessive spending on O’Neal Park.  Since he had decided he was not able to make a difference in stopping the problem, he had decided not to run for reelection.  According to the paper and conversations with ERIC, apparently Mr. Horton has now decided to challenge Mayor Jones in the mayoral race.  Mr. Horton has asked to come and speak to the TEA Party group again to try and enlist our support.   BOB said we can not openly support any candidate, but we can ‘recommend’, so going into the elections this year we need to again have a printed guide like we did last time and say “The following candidates support the TEA Party principles.”  He thinks this will sound better than ‘the TEA Party recommends’.   BOB wanted to know if anyone was opposed to David Horton coming and speaking to us.  ERIC would like to get Jerry Jones down also and have a debate.  Comments were ‘sounds good to me’ and ‘ought to be interesting’.  BOB said normally when you have a  debate, questions are asked; so we will need to formulate some very relative, Morehead City issue/interest type questions to ask.  LOU KUKULINSKI asked why the TEA Party would be doing this, since most of us do not live in Morehead anyway.  ERIC said this issue (sulfur) affects not only Morehead City but Carteret County also.  Maybe, if we didn’t think we should have a debate at our meeting, then perhaps we could have something like the League of Women Voters have, like at the court house and advertise it.  CLAYTON said he hoped we would ask legitimate questions, not stupid ones like the LWV usually ask.  Many members agreed.  The questions are stacked.  ERIC said if we are going to be the one to sponsor this, then the questions should come from us.  BOB said one of the problems with having this type of questionnaire, is who we are going to invite.  Just about every municipality is having an election.  In addition to mayoral races, there are city council member races.  To invite all the candidates would be overwhelming and time consuming.  It would be too big a production and he didn’t know of many people who would want to sit around for 4 hours listening to the candidates argue.  Discussed breaking the debates down into more than one event.  Maybe having the mayors debate and all be asked the same questions and at a later date have the city council debates.  Would there be enough interest by the public for such events?

BOB said over the next couple of meetings we need to be thinking about the election this fall (2011) and how we can be an effective organization in bringing about electing people that think along the same lines as the TEA Party.  ‘Fiscally responsible, Limited Government, and Free Markets’.   This sulfur business is a good example of why we need some limited government intervention and regulation.  PAT said she did not think regulation was the problem here, but it appeared that instead we need to ‘follow the money’.  BOB said we need an investigative reporter to look into this, that he feels there is a good story here to be told.

It was reported that one of our members had heard on the radio on his way to the meeting that we were now back in District 3.  BOB said he understood that it had been requested that the county not be divided into 2 districts.  Understand that a couple of other counties would be split up and added to District 3 also.  Rumor is they are going to split up District 7, so McIntire will be totally redistricted out of his seat.  As BOB said, ‘none of it is a done deal yet’.

NANCY BOCK said she was missing a bag for covering and carrying a table that was used at the July 4th parade.  If anyone has any idea what happened to it, please let her know.  She would check with ROMA to see if he put it into his car.

Question was raised ‘were we going to have David Horton come and speak with us’?  HOWARD GARNER made the motion that we have Mr. Horton come and speak at one of our meetings and Mr. Jones attend another meeting rather that have a debate between the two.  That also will cut down on the length of our meetings.  And after both have spoken, we can make a decision as to what we will do in the election.  Decision was made not to have a debate
between Jones and Horton.  We can do the same with any other town official races if we would like.

GRACE GILLIKIN reported on talking with the lady in charge of the Morehead parade and that she had requested any information to be sent to her as soon as available.

EULA PARKIN asked “How many here tonight consider themselves a Christian?”  She read an article on the ‘Sad Solidarity of Christians’.  A recent study revealed that over 100,000 Christians are killed every year because of their faith.  That equates to one every 5 minutes 24/7.  As we have sat in here tonight talking for about an hour and a half, 12 to 18 Christians have been killed.  This is not just in Muslim countries, but they are being persecuted in other countries.  She said it was reported that at a Christian funeral in Holland, it was yelled “one dog less”.  Does this sound familiar?  How about the religious group that pickets military funerals here in the US?
Discussed Muslim mosques being built.  There is no separation of church and state in the Muslim religion.   It incorporates Sharia law into their religion.

BOB directed ERIC to contact David Horton to come and talk with us sometime in the next few weeks.  Asked that he also ask Jones, but schedule him on a different date.

Meeting adjourned at 7:30 pm.

JULY 12, 2011

Meeting held at Golden Corral, Morehead City, NC
Meeting called to order at 6:00 pm by President BOB CAVANAUGH
Pledge of Allegiance led by WAYNE WILLIS
Invocation by JERE GEURIN
Number in Attendance – 24

New Attendees:
Kelly? – Sorry I did not get her name, since she did not sign in.  I enjoyed talking to her after the meeting.  She owns a farm near Raeford and visits in Carteret County.
Gene & Kathy Crain – They live on a boat and are staying around Beaufort while they are doing some repairs to their boat.
BOB told us about his life with boating.  Bought a boat and while he was under contract with Brandywine, he kept his boat there.  When the contract was up, he had to move the boat, whereupon it was stolen.  It was a 16’ John boat and was never in the water.  About three years ago he bought another boat, and it still has never been overboard.

BOB read an email he had received concerning a study on class size and mortality rates:
“Children randomized to small classes (13-17 students) experienced improved measures of cognition and academic performance relative to those assigned to regular classes (22-25 students).  As expected, these cognitive measures were significantly inversely associated with mortality rates.  However, through age 29 years, students randomized to small class size nevertheless experienced higher mortality rates than those randomized to regular size classes.  The groups at risk included males, whites/Asians, and higher income students.  The study involved 11,601 students in Tennessee between 1985 and 1989.

BOB reported on the “Beaufort County Committee for Constitutional Studies and Beaufort County Post 6088 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in cooperation with Harvest Church will celebrate the 224th birthday of the U.S. Constitution with a short ceremony followed by the presentation of a seminar on the Principles of Liberty and the United States Constitution.  The presenter will be Dr. Earl Taylor, president of National Center for Constitutional Studies, who is an authority on the Constitution.”  The event will be held Saturday, September 10, 2011, 8:00 am.-5:00 pm.  Admission is Free; however a $15.00 donation will cover the cost of a study guide, which will be available and is recommended.  There will be periods for breaks and lunch.  Restaurants are nearby or you may brown bag.   NANCY BOCK said she had read where one of these seminars will be held in New Bern.  She will report to the members as she gets additional information.

BOB asked if everyone was familiar with the Chevy Volt and the ‘dirty little secret behind  it’.   He had read where Patrick Michaels, a senior fellow in Environmental Studies at the Cato Institute recapped the well-known consumer fraud in which GM has touted the VOLT as an all-electric mass production vehicle on the supposed basis of which its sales receive a $7,500.00 taxpayer subsidy, which still renders it overpriced and unmarketable.  Sales are anemic:  326 in December, 321 in January and 281 in February and has announced a production run of 100,000 cars in the first two years.  “Who is going to buy all these cars?”  Answer:  Jeffrey Immelt’s GE will buy a boatload of those uneconomic GM cars.  (As you probably know President Obama recently selected GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt to chair his Economic Advisory Board.)  Soon after Immelt’s appointment he announced that GE will buy 50,000 VOLTS in the next two years, or half the total produced.
Assuming the corporation qualified for the same tax credit, we (you and me) just shelled out $375,000,000.00 to a company that pays no taxes, to buy cars that no one else wants, so that GM will not tank and produce even more cars that no one wants.  It has been found that in a telling attempt to preserve battery power, the heater is exceedingly weak.  Consumer Reports their tests averaged a paltry 25 miles of electric-only running, (in part because it was tested in cold Connecticut).  It will be interesting to see what the range is on a hot, traffic-jammed summer day, when the air conditioner will really tax the batteries.  When the gas engine came on, Consumer Reports got about 30 miles to the gallon of ‘premium’ fuel, which in terms of additional cost of high-test gas, drives the effective mileage closer to 27 mpg.  A conventional Honda Accord, which seats 5 (VOLT 4), gets 35 mpg on the highway, and costs less that half of what VOLT costs, even with the tax break.
This is a classic tale of the Government deciding what the public needs, not the marketplace.  Why?  To keep the UAW in business, so they can pay for Obama’s reelection and because he owes them for his election.  Starting to make sense now?

BOB reported on Obama’s speech this past week on increasing the debt, where he talked about millionaires keeping money they didn’t need.  They should be willing to give it to those in need.  Even he had more money than he needed.  BOB then read a list of 55 programs
the Republicans had proposed cutting, but the Democrats won’t agree to any cuts at all.  These programs would equal a total savings of $2.5 TRILLION.  Following are just a portion of the Republican proposed cuts for your viewing:
Corporation for Public Broadcasting Subsidy – $445 million annual savings
International Fund for Ireland – $17 million annual savings
National Endowment for the Arts – $167.5 million annual savings
National Endowment for Humanities – $167.5 million annual savings
Amtrak Subsidies – $1.565 billion annual savings
Eliminate duplicative education programs (HR2274 in last Congress eliminates 68
programs at a savings of) – $1.3 billion annual savings.
Cut Federal Travel Budget in Half – $7.5 billion annual savings
Trim Federal Vehicle Budget by 20% – $600 million annual savings
Essential Air Service – $150 million annual savings
Intercity and High Speed Rail Grants – $2.5 billion annual savings
Economic Assistance to Egypt – $250 million annually
General Assistance to District of Columbia – $210 million annual savings
Presidential Campaign Fund – $775 million savings over ten years
And how about:
Require the IRS to deposit fees for some services it offers (such as processing payment
plans for taxpayers) to the Treasury, instead of allowing it to remain as part of its
budget – $1.8 billion savings over ten years.
Require collection of unpaid taxes by federal employees!!! – $1 billion total savings
Prohibit taxpayer funded union activities by federal employees – $1.2 billion over 10 yrs.
Eliminate death gratuity for Members of Congress
Eliminate fund for Obamacare administrative costs – $900 million savings.
And this is only 18 of the 55 proposed!!

TOM HARMON gave the following report on his wife’s recovery.  She had received 2nd and 3rd degree burns when she spilled a pot of hot grease on her legs.  He carried her to Carteret General on the 4th and they wrapped her legs.  The next day they sent her to the NC Jaycee Burn Center.  She had to have skin grafts.  She has gone through some rough times but is walking a little more each day and improving with time.  Tom was not at home when the accident occurred.

Discussed LIGHT BULBS – An aide of Walter B. Jones said Jones was against doing away with the old style bulbs.  PAT NALITZ said they had found that turning on and off the new type of bulb (which is supposed to last almost forever) will deplete the life of the bulb.  BOB said he had one in a crawl space that he installed in 2008 and it was still burning (had never been turned off).  PEGGY GARNER said she hoped they did not do away with the old bulbs, since those who live in the country depend on them to heat the pump houses in the winter.   (They put off heat.)  Also she had read where they had been replaced in street lamps in a northern city and they were having problems with them, especially in the winter.  It seems the old bulbs put off enough heat to melt the snow and the new ones let it pile up creating problems.

GERE GUERIN said he had several packages to be mailed to our troops overseas and
requested that the attendees please take one and mail it tomorrow.  The cost is only $12.95 and will reach 10 to 20 GIs.

Discussed the letter to the editor from a C4 member criticizing County Commissioner Chair Doug Harris.

Discussed Project on dredging at Port for sulfur project.  The facility will be 2 ½ times taller than the Beaufort bridge.  This will ruin Morehead City with the sulfur smell (like rotten eggs).  HOWARD questioned how in the world they got all the permits through without the people of Morehead knowing something was going on.  Mayor Jones and Manager Randy did a lot of manipulating behind the scenes.  It only came out when the CAMA report came out.  They will be bringing the product from Aurora to process here and then ship back to Aurora.  BOB asked us to keep our eyes and ears open and keep up to date on this project.

BOB said STEVE BEST had been assigned to report each week on a portion of Agenda 21.  STEVE has a 30 minute program  (Audio/no video) which he plans to show next week.

WAYNE WILLIS asked if anyone had heard anything on overriding Gov Perdue’s Vetos.  The Legislature will return to Raleigh tomorrow and that’s when the fun begins.  Discussed various bills.
Discussed Redistricting of 3rd and 7th Districts.  It appears that Palombo, who planned to run again Jones, is having to rethink his position.  Since Onslow and most of Carteret have been removed from Jones’ district, it also cuts back on the number of those familiar with Palombo.  WAYNE said Federal Law mandates that we are required to maintain a certain number of black districts.  This redistricting is supposed to help the Republicans gain the necessary 4 seats.  The census showed that more people are now situated (living) in the central part of the state.  Therefore, the coastal area districts are having to be enlarged to obtain the required number of voters.  HOWARD said he remembers attending a Craven County Tax Payer Association meeting several years ago where gerrymandering was set up to have a certain number of districts with large number of blacks.  Redistricting is done every 10 years after the census.  Areas are divided accordingly to maintain an equal number of voters.  It has been over 100 years since the Republicans have been able to have a say so in the redistricting.
MISC. Discussions:
RUTH PARKER reported that the couple from South Carolina, (Ken and Betty Lee Westbury), that were here for our May 10th meeting, had lunch at Cox’s today.  They said they really would love to attend our meeting tonight but had other plans.  They reported that they had taken some of our ideas they had heard back to South Carolina with them and were in the process of getting rid of about 3 people.  They sent us their best wishes.
EULA PARKIN said it was becoming more and more obvious that the TEA Party has to have a thick skin.  She said she had been watching GLEE on TV the other night and got very upset with the way it made fun of the TEA Party.
BOB said it was ridiculous the way the media made fun of Michelle Bachman’s gaffs, but ignored Obama’s …example when he said he had been to all our 57 states.
Someone talked about how Texas job hiring was increasing.  Another reported that they are importing items from Mexico to sell here and are hiring people to transport them to other areas for distribution.  Items are not made here so we are helping Mexico more than the US.
School Discussion.  BOB said Robin Comer (County Commissioner) had told him that once the money is allocated and handed over to the school superintendent, the schools can spend that money anyway they wish.  Requests for a breakdown of spending had gone unanswered.  He finally received a one page accounting from Dr. Novey, which was worthless.  They say they have 710 teachers in the county, but how do we know that is right?  Can we trust anything they report any more?   PAT NALITZ said a teacher had told her that six teachers were going to lose their jobs in her school, but when she spoke with her recently she said no teachers were let go; but some aides she understood were.  Pat wanted to know why they were told that 6 teachers were going to lose their jobs and it didn’t happen.  BOB asked PAT if she would go on line and try to determine exactly how many teachers there are in Carteret County; are some being counted more than once.  She said she would try but it might be difficult since she had to check each and every school and there may be some overlap.   The Board of Education is only an Amen committee to Dr. Novey.  Al Hill is the new chairman of the BOE.  He just swapped jobs with Cathy Nagle.   Most feel that everything is already decided prior to meetings.  We still need to find good Conservative people to run for the BOE.

NANCY BOCK, Treasurer, reported that we made $450.00 on the parade and we have $1,246.00 in the bank.

A small discussion on Immigration followed.  Alabama’s law is the toughest.  Most of the states attempts at controlling immigration have been kicked down by local circuit judges.  It will end up in the Supreme Court before anything can take affect.  A lot of the states have prostituted themselves by folding under to the Feds for their money.

Meeting adjourned at 7:25.

CCTPP Meeting Minutes, July 5, 2011

CRYSTAL COAST TEA PARTY PATRIOTS
JULY 5, 2011

Meeting held at Golden Corral, Morehead City, NC
Meeting called to order at 6:00pm by President BOB CAVANAUGH
Pledge of Allegiance led by DIANE LANG
Invocation by EULA PARKIN

BOB CAVANAUGH welcomed Bev and Bob Stone, new attendees to our meetings.

BEAUFORT JULY 4TH PARADE
BOB reported that from the majority of comments made and attitude of the spectators, our float was very well received.  He thanked KENNY and NANCY BOCK for use of the newly refinished trailer and decorations, flags, buntings, fringe, etc.  Thanked all who had helped decorate and participated. Just goes to show what we can do when we all pull together.  He commented on TIM BUCK, who made a great Uncle Sam, EULA PARKIN for the use of her driveway, which had made it very convenient to the parade route, and PEGGY GARNER for the signs she had made.
ROMA WADE told of the one young lady who placed her hand alongside her eyes, like blinders, when she walked by his table where he was selling our shirts.  RUTH PARKER and TOM AUSTIN had commented on two people in the crowd who refused a copy of the pocket Constitution, saying they did not want any of our propaganda.  Other than those, all other reception seemed to be favorable, with many thumbs up and cheers, as we rode by.
NANCY was asked ‘what supplies do we have left,’ (ie. shirts, hats, etc.)  NANCY said we still have a lot of shirts, but she has not had time to inventory the sizes.   We are totally out of the little flags though.  She reported that we had made $410.00 on items sold.  Question was raised ‘if we had had more tables set up selling the shirts, could we have made more’?  Roma said possibly yes, however; we had to set up in front of a store and he had gone up and down the street trying to find a location to set up.  Most said they would prefer we not set up in front of their place, due to creating dissension or possible conflict among some of their customers.  Thus he had once again set up in front of his friend’s place of business where they had set up a couple of years ago.
BOB said we might need to check into what is required for our participation in the next parade, which would probably be held in Morehead on Veteran’s Day in November.  Everyone agreed that the parade was a really good idea and thought we should start getting ready with a possible theme and any items we may need, but also be looking about locations to have sales tables.  NANCY asked ‘what is the protocol for veterans wearing their uniforms in these parades’.  Is it allowed?   She thought it would be a good idea to have all the branches of service honored on our float.  There was a lot of good natured joking about getting into their uniforms after all this time, so someone recommended that we get flags to fly representing each service – it would be cheaper than trying to get all those un-fitting uniforms altered to fit.
ERIC BROYLES said he had been impressed with a parade in Washington where the uniforms through the ages had been worn.  They had fife and drummers which was impressive also.  BOB told him he could be in charge of getting all that together if he wanted to, but he thought all those old uniforms would be a “little bit” hard to come by.  BOB did say he was surprised that there were no bands in the parade Monday.  DIANE LANG said she had been told it was hard to get bands together since school was out.  NANCY said that was the main thing missing was the music.
BOB turned the floor over to SCOTT CARPENTER to conduct a flip chart discussion of pros and cons on the parade.  SCOTT said he was a visual kind of guy and came from the old school of using charts and graphs.  He preferred to put ideas on the board for discussion in depth.  First of all were the costumes we had in the parade.  TIM BUCK in the Uncle Sam costume was a tremendous hit.  The ones in period costume up front holding the “We the People” banner and flag, were great also.  NANCY said her husband felt like they were not a part of the TEA Party float, more of an entry by themselves.  BOB said it appeared to him they were walking too close to the double-decker bus ahead of us.  NANCY said they were told to keep up with the bus.  We need some way to tie them with the rest of the group.  NANCY said we might to get some of the group riding on the float to dress up in the same period costumes also.  DIANE said maybe we could have a couple of TEA party members in the red shirts walking ahead of the “We the People” banner.   BOB said he could see the change in wearing the period costumes for the 4th parade, but that would not apply to the parade in November for veterans’ day.  The 4th was about the declaration of independence.  Veteran’s day would be more about the current day’s uniforms – World War II, Korea, Viet Nam, etc.  If you are still on active duty, then you can not participate in these political events.  HOWARD GARNER said ‘back to the ‘We the People’ banner and its’ problem…couldn’t we just add a small section on each side with the TEA Party emblem’ or a tea pot to identify the connection.  BOB said ‘the members in red shirts passing out pocket Constitutions and flags were back by the float’.  ‘Maybe if they were up closer to the banner, we would not have had that problem.’  Maybe they should have been more dispersed on the sides (from ahead of the truck to the back of the float).  That way it would have all been linked together.  ROMA said maybe we could have two people carrying a “TEA PARTY” banner ahead of the “We the People” banner.  EULA asked how many there had served in World War II, the Korean War.  She was surprised to learn no one in attendance had fought in WWII.  She said she had grown up then.  Some joking about ages went on, until BOB reminded us that the TEA Party was not about the military.  We support the military, not necessarily the wars going on, but support our men and women in uniform.  He does not think we need to make some sort of military statement in every parade, that we follow the theme of the parade or reason for the parade.  PEGGY GARNER said she thought if we marched in the Veteran’s Day Parade, we should use ‘Freedom is NOT Free’ as our idea for the float.  BOB said “Are we going to have a ‘Freedom is Not Free’ banner?”  PEGGY said we probably should.
SCOTT asked if we could get back to critiquing our float in yesterday’s parade.  He again thanked KENNY BOCK for the great job he did in redoing the trailer.  The blue sides and red plywood flooring was perfect.  The flags were great, but did everyone understand what each of the flags were or stood for.  He had heard several people asking what kind of flag was that.  Some asked about the red and blue striped flag – what kind was it?  Maybe if we use them again we should have a flyer or some kind of information explaining the significance of each flag.  NANCY said all the flags on the float had been flown right before the Revolutionary War.  SCOTT said we did not need to discuss them right now, but it should give us something to think about if we used them again.  He thought we might could have used even more flags on the float; maybe at least 2 to 4 more.  BOB said for the Veteran’s Day parade we could have more flags (one for each branch of the military, maybe a MIA flag, etc.)  KEN LANG said for next year’s 4th of July parade, maybe we could have a “We the People” flag made up.  He started to discuss the table for sales, but SCOTT requested we stay on the parade itself right now.  Keep that thought and we would discuss that next after we finish up with the parade.  SCOTT wanted to know if everyone who rode on the trailer was comfortable and safe with the seating.  All replied yes.  No problem with flags hitting us in the face or things like that.  No complaints.  SCOTT wanted to know if the riding of motorcycles was something BOB wanted to encourage.  BOB said he had no problem with Roy or anyone else riding their motorcycles.  ROY MUSSER had come up on his and asked if he could just ride behind the float, rather than on the trailer and BOB had said yes.  TOM AUSTIN had said he wished he had thought about riding his and would have liked to have done so.  LOU KUKULENSKI had also voiced his interest.
EULA commented on the length of the Morehead City Memorial Day parade.  It’s a long parade; from the Catholic Church to the 2nd or 3rd block on Arendell.
SCOTT brought us back to the discussion on the 4th parade.  He thought having our address sticker on the backs of the pocket Constitutions was a fabulous idea.  Wanted to know if anyone knew how many had been handed out.  It was estimated about four to five hundred from the float and about two boxes (estimated at 500) at the sales table.  SCOTT also wanted to know if we wanted to pass out anything other than the Constitution and flags, like maybe a flyer with TEA Party information.  KEN said he didn’t think we should pass flyers out from the float area, because they might just end up thrown down and create trash and possibly be considered political.  He thought maybe we should come up with a fact sheet to pass out at the table where we sold our shirts.  He had been working on something on Agenda 21 last week, but couldn’t get the data formatted like he wanted.  He felt we needed to come up with fact sheets, like on Carteret County Education, NC State Legislation, 20 vetoes by the Governor, etc.  Things we can put out on the table for people to take and read.  BOB said he agreed to having them on our table would be OK but not appropriate for us to hand out from the float.  Maybe we should have some of our business cards on the table also, giving time and place of our meetings.  NANCY said perhaps we could add that information to the address labels we put on the pocket Constitutions; thereby eliminating anything that could possibly get lost or blow away.   ROMA said he thought we could easily pass out a thousand or more Constitutions at a parade the size of Morehead’s.  ERIC said we could save ourselves some money by contacting our representatives, and senators, who graciously give bunches of the Constitutions to their constituents free.  They each send out about 500 copies.  BOB said let’s get some from them, and next month ask again, saying we have handed all those out.  We’ll stockpile them for the next parade.
SCOTT asked if he had heard someone talk about having music on the float?  BOB said there will be bands in the Veterans’ Day parade.  NANCY said the only music she heard in the Beaufort parade was a guy with a guitar singing God Bless America and another guy with a boom box on his shoulder…and maybe some music from the ‘belly dancing float’.
SCOTT questioned about the taking of photos.  Did we have someone lined up to take pictures to go on our web-site.   Answer was not really.  Some people had phones with cameras, like TOM AUSTIN, but no one had been asked to film the event.  RUTH PARKER said she had taken some, and NANCY said a friend of hers had taken some, but she hadn’t seen them yet.  We need to have someone lined up for the next parade to make sure we have a record of the event.  CLAYTON GILLIKIN said he would like to have a sign made up saying “Even Santa is a member of the TEA Party”.  SCOTT wanted to know if we were happy with the posters we had or did we need more.  PEGGY said she had only had time to make the three that were used.  Two of them had been posted at the table with the shirts (The Crystal Coast TEA Party supports Fiscal Responsibility, Free Markets, Limited Government) and (The Crystal Coast TEA Party does not pledge Allegiance to any Political Party).   The other poster said GOD Bless America and was held by someone riding on the float.  NANCY said she would like for us to have one on each side of the truck and would have used the GOD Bless America there if we had had another.  PEGGY said she would try to have them made up before the next parade.  HOWARD said we need to give PEGGY time to prepare any posters we want, so to please get her whatever information you want on a sign early.  Discussion of how many more posters we could use.  Have the two at the sales table, one God Bless America and one more for the other side of the truck.   BOB did not want to tie up the walker and riders hands with posters.  They were needed to hand out flags, Constitutions and candy.  PEGGY said she had only had the opportunity to make one ‘TEA PARTY TAXI’ sign, but had received a lot of comments on it.
HOWARD said we went through about a half bushel of candy.  PEGGY said she and RUTH had bought about $70.00 worth and some friends of PEGGY’s had donated about 6 bags more, so we had about $100.00 worth of candy for this parade.  We had enough to pass out all the way through the parade, with very little left, by pacing ourselves toward the end.  If we pass out candy in Morehead we need to start stocking up now.  GRACE said we usually could get a good deal after Halloween.  Often the businesses will give deep discounts just to get rid of it.  CLAYTON said he had gone in and told the manager if he would give him a decent price he would take all the left over candy off his hands and usually he could pick up baskets full for around $20.00 or so.
SCOTT asked if there were anything else we could think of to improve our float for next time.  CLAYTON said ‘yes, glass enclosed and air conditioned’.  It was hot out there.
SCOTT continued with the sales table pro and cons.  FRED DECKER said they had passed out two boxes of Constitutions and it was estimated to have between 200 and 250 in each box, so we determined about 500 had been handed out to the crowd at the table booth.  Since ROMA was in charge of the table, he said the only thing he could think of to improve it would be to have a larger table.  Several volunteered a six foot table, but ROMA said that would have been too big for where they were set up in Beaufort.  He said he could have passed out more small flags if they had had them.  KEN said he could get a four foot table for next time if ROMA wanted.
Discussed where and how many tables we should set up in Morehead for the parade.   Could possibly use as many as three tables for that parade.  It was suggested we set up in the park, but BOB thinks we need to spread out, not confine ourselves to one spot.  KEN said we need to find out first if we can set up tables and if so where are they allowed.  Will we need some kind of permit?  Is it a county law that we have to have our booth set up in front of a store front or private property?  ROMA said he felt that Morehead would be like Beaufort, in that the store owners would not like to have someone they consider political setting up on their space.  ROY said we are not political, but ROMA said they don’t understand that.  They consider us political regardless of what we say.   BOB wanted to know if we could set up on the railroad tracks.  Some said we might get run over and another said the railroad would not be running during that part of the day.  NANCY said she had been concerned over the attitude of some about the TEA Party being political so she had called to verify our setting up a table on Front Street.  The lady she talked to wanted to know if we were non-profit, and if we were only going to set up that one day.  If we decide to enter a float next year we may have to get an ‘itinerate license’, which would not cost anything, so we may need to do that in Morehead.  We need to check.  We still need an answer as to whether these booths need to be on private property and have permission from the owner.  GRACE said she would ask about it when she made application and arrangements for us to be in the parade.  She gets the information every year so she is more up on what is needed.
SCOTT wanted to know if there was anything else we needed to discuss before closing.  ROMA was asked if we needed any more shirts and he said it may sound strange but he definitely needed more 3X, 2X and Extra Large.  NANCY said she would have to take an inventory and see what we had left.  BOB said Extra Large was considered Small in Carteret County, just look around the room.  Question was raised if we wanted to change the logo on our shirts.  BOB said let’s get rid of the ones we have right now and then discuss which charities we would like to sponsor.  NANCY said maybe we could come up with one generic logo to cover several charities.  There’s another group in Jacksonville called ‘Hope for Warriors’ that uses the same emblem as Wounded Warriors.   Need to think on it.  NANCY had checked in the past and there will be no increase in cost if we do change.  There are several charitable organizations that need assistance.  BOB wanted to know how we did on selling hats.  ROMA said not too good, maybe around 5 or so.  More people were interested in the shirts.  Did sell a few of the stickers we had available (Don’t tread on me and Crystal Coast Tea Party Patriots).

EULA reported on the July 2 event that was to be held in France did not happen.  Also reported on information she had gotten on Arab Spring.  ERNIE GUTHRIE feels we need to get out the United Nations.

HOWARD reported on Norman Sanderson’s request that when the Redistricting discussion came up for a vote, he would like to have a big crowd come up to Raleigh in support.  BOB reported on the rally in New Bern last Friday and the lack of support received by our politicians.  The redistricting has put us in District 7, with the eastern end of our county remaining in District 3.  The rational for the redistricting is to have more Republican districts.  True we had a victory in the 2010 election but nationally we didn’t do so good.  The only seat we picked up was Etheridge’s and we wouldn’t have gained that if he hadn’t grabbed that student and created a bad scene.  Hope is that the redistricting will protect Rene Ellmers who took that seat.  Mike McIntyre (D) just did win over the Republican who ran for District 7.  By shifting western Carteret County into District 7, the hope is McIntyre will not be around after 2012.  Several Republicans holding seats are RHINO’s and need to be looked at carefully at the next election.  Remember we are for the most conservative candidate.  BOB reported that ERIC had sent out several letters recently requesting information for the TEA Party.   He would like ERIC to bring these requested items up before the meetings so we are informed as to what is being requested and why.  We need to make group decisions since we are a bottom up not top down organization.  Main thing ERIC was interested in was why there were no hearing meetings on redistribution close to us.  The closest one is Wilmington.  Since the census determined more people had moved to the center of the state and the population had decreased on the coast, the districts were going to have to be bigger to include more people.  The Carteret County paper has a map on Sunday’s front page showing the Federal redistricting.  BOB said he had not seen a map of the North Carolina redistricting.  Much discussion followed on pros and cons on redistricting.

ERIC will be attending the Morehead City Council meeting next week.  Will give report at the following meeting.

AGENDA 21 – STEVE BEST was asked by BOB to read and review Agenda 21 and report on a chapter at each meeting.

BOB reported on the now defunct TEA Party in Jacksonville.  They had been anti-Muslim more than anything else, and did not have a mission statement with emphasis on Fiscal Responsibility, Free Markets, and Limited Government.  Still have some who are asking for help and information.  We are still talking about getting a group started down east but as of yet have not been successful.  FRED and GRACE are still hoping to get someone interested in promoting a TEA Party there.  It takes a group of people to strap that responsibility on and keep the interest going.  BOB believes the reason our group remains strong is because we meet each week and it has become a habit.

BOB started a discussion on illegal immigration.  Many different opinions were offered.
SUSAN RYNAS said she had moved here from California due to the influx of Mexicans who had taken over her state.  She was afraid the same thing was going to happen here.   A very good discussion and various ideas were offered.  But most agreed that we do need to SECURE the BORDERS.

Secretary’s Note:  (Wish I could elaborate on some of the opinions and ideas offered, but the meeting ran longer than usual and thus the minutes are long also.   It was a very interesting conversation, especially BOB’s discussion on NAFTA.  Stay informed by attending the meetings each Tuesday night at the Golden Corral.)

Meeting adjourned at 7:45 pm
Minutes submitted by PEGGY GARNER
